My son had open heart surgery last year and another surgery last month. Both times we had to find ways to keep him occupied while he was in bed and connected to IV's and tubes. Lots of TV/movies and books.

My mom got us a Moonlight storybook projector that goes on a phone so we could put the pictures on the ceiling and read books to him (https://mymoonlite.com/). It was different and captured his attention.

For the parents gift cards to Grub Hub and Uber Eats were awesome because it provided an alternative to the hospital cafeteria food.

Besides what others said, I think any kind of little toys in "blind bags" or "surprise packs" are good - you could get a few for both him and his big sister to open up. Hatchimals Collegtibles (little collectibles or small keychain sized stuffed animals, work for boys or girls), Lalaloopsy (for girls), Lego, Grossery Gang (boys), Shopkins (girls)....

Melissa and Doug water wow books, puzzles, and the Melissa and Doug reusable sticker pad are my go to gifts for that age group.

@Foodnerd81: @JennyPenny: yes! This is a good idea. It's also got a couple games, so he can just lie in bed and press buttons while he's recovering.

@JennyPenny: ha- my 2 year old is literally walking around with this saying CHEEEEEEEESE as we speak! So I second that (ours was actually a gift for my 4 year old but they both love it).

I like the idea of credits to buy shows or movies he likes, if you know he has a tablet of some sort. Depending how speedy and what he has, you could also do something like a kids kindle fire. Both my kids (2 and 4.5) like those Melissa and Doug sets with the reusable puffy stickers and a book “scene”, and their Boogie Boards (Boogie Board Scribble 'n Play https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FZMOUQM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_vEF.Ab1PD6FV5 we have that one but their are cheaper ones that are prime eligible and probably just as good).

And I think getting the older sibling something too is a really nice idea.

My 3yo DS got this for Christmas and he is so obsessed with it, we often have to take it away. https://www.amazon.com/VTech-Kidizoom-Camera-Pix-Blue/dp/B01D11ZOAK/ I could imagine it being nice when you have limited mobility after surgery, and maybe to take pictures of visitors, the hospital, etc. But my son just loves to take a picture of anything - his foot, his knee, his ankle, his shoe, etc.

Maybe a lego junior set to put together, a new movie, coloring book and the giant box of crayons, favorite food. For the older sister, if she has a tablet of some sort, maybe a gift card for store credit to buy a movie or music or game?

I second balloons. When my godson was in the hospital with cancer, he LOVED that I brought him a balloon every day. He got other things, but the balloons are what he remembers to this day.

And it would be nice to get the older kid something. His siblings didn't really understand why he was getting so much attention. The oldest let go of his balloons "on accident" when he got home.

What about a cookie bouquet and a toy? When my son was 3, he got a wooden toy parking garage and had probably played with it every day since he got it 3 years ago.

I would go with a book stories that can be read to him (as opposed to a picture book). Recovery will be exhausting at first, so he might not feel like doing anything. Or have a balloon bouquet delivered because what 3yo wouldn't just light up over one (but check first with the hospital to see if they are allowed... if he is in the ICU after the surgery, they can be very strict about what goes in the room).

Although not tangible but if he is stuck in bed maybe something like itunes credits so he could download some of his favorite shows?

Books are always a hit with my kids and maybe something like a healthy snack basket with raisins, dried cranberries, nuts (if he isn't allergic) etc.?

Some nice pens and coloring books might also work for both kids? My kids also love the Melissa & Doug wipe-away books and the sticker blocks...

How spendy are you thinking? A Leappad or something along those lines might be a good thing to have while spending a lot of time recovering in bed.

My boss's 3yo is having open heart surgery next week.

What are some good gift ideas for him and/or their family? I need to procure something by Tue to give to my boss at the office on Wed.

I have know my boss for six years and worked for him for four. He has gotten me promoted twice, got me a nice gift when my son was born, and was very supportive during my last pregnancy and maternity leave and so far has been great during this pregnancy too. So I would like to do something nice, and it's ok if it is a little spendy.

They also have an older daughter who I think is around 5 now. I am happy to get something inclusive for her too. I sometimes get an older sibling gift when I get a baby gift. Not sure if he same thing applies.
