yes x 100 to the towel/beach bucket present, and do it in a barbie theme if thats what the mum asked for. Its winter here, but my 4 year old uses a plush beach towel as an indoor picninc blanket.

Melissa and Doug makes these princess glitter things (the glitter is on a sheet that you stick to certain parts of the picture and then scratch to transfer it), and my 4yo DD loves them.

She also loves her Frozen beach towel that her grandma wrapped another present with.

I like the Barbie towel idea, or something Barbie related but not exactly a Barbie. That way you don't have to worry about getting her a doll she already has, and a towel is more useful/functional than another doll.

For DD's 3rd birthday a friend gave her a princess towel and PJ's, which she LOVED

If mom said Barbie, I would go with something Barbie-related for sure. 4 year olds really love what they love. My DD was obsessed with My Little Pony at 4 and 5, and was so happy anytime she got something MLP related.

Not at all girly but I've yet to meet a 4 year old who doesn't love the stomp rocket.

DD (almost 4) has and LOVES this:

https://www.amazon.com/Barbie-CCP43-Sisters-Cruiser-Vehicle/dp/B00LD3MZA6?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0

However, we didn't pay that much for it (more like $18-$20); here's a more budget friendly option:

https://www.amazon.com/Barbie-DGW23-Glam-Convertible/dp/B014DEHDSU/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1465580682&sr=8-4&keywords=barbie+jeep

ETA: I would REALLY avoid giving character gifts not mentioned by the mom. For example, I know Doc McStuffins and Sofia the First are hugely popular...but my two and four year olds have no idea who these characters are simply because they are picky about their screen time and refuse to venture beyond Dora and Daniel Tiger :silly:

@bakingdoodle: My DD loves Barbie too!

Not sure of your budget but here are 2 options:

DD has this one and its her favorite
https://www.amazon.com/Barbie-Rainbow-Lights-Mermaid-Doll/dp/B015CCR1FW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1465580561&sr=8-2&keywords=barbie+mermaid

cheaper option and can still be used in the water
https://www.amazon.com/Barbie-DNP41-Rainbow-Mermaid-Doll/dp/B014DEJ8GA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1465580561&sr=8-3&keywords=barbie+mermaid

We just had our DD's 4th birthday party. Here are some ideas of things that she received and loved: broom set from Target (mini broom and dustpan), Lego Juniors (age range for these sets begins at 4), Elsa and Anna barbie like dolls, books, craft stuff (she loves doing craft things). My DD received awhile ago a Doc McStuffins doctor kit (I've seen them at Target) and plays with it all the time. I would just include a gift receipt with whatever you purchase in case she would already have something.

Doc McStuffin is cute, I actually have a little Doc Mcstuffin bag with 3 puzzles that I have stashed in my birthday party supply closet.

But if the mom said barbie, I would just go with barbie. You can still think outside the box if you dont want to give a toy. Look for a cute barbie beach towel and a sand bucket? A barbie coloring book with some new markers?

Our son has been invited to attend a birthday party (first time!). it's at one of those inflatable playground place.
What would you give? I did ask the mom and she said that the little girl is all about Barbie... or get her something very girly....
Any suggestion? should I just buy a barbie kit of some sort and give a gift receipt and call it a day? One of my friend suggested Doc McStuffin. Didn't even know about her.
