I’m really sorry to hear about your mom’s loss. 💛 It’s such a thoughtful thing that you’re looking for ways to comfort her. When my aunt went through something similar, I got her a paint by numbers kit, it gave her something calming to focus on and a sense of accomplishment seeing it finished.

There are even places like https://numeralpaint.com/
where you can create a custom kit from a family photo, which can make it extra meaningful. It might be a gentle way for her to keep busy while also creating something beautiful.

@SweetCaroline: So sorry for your loss. My Dad passed away quite a while ago now, when I was in college, buy my parents had been married for 33 years by that point! Anyway, I like your ideas. Another idea is an experience gift for when she visits you--something to look forward to like a show or concert. Or fancy cooking class with you.

If you don't live in the same town, what about a Zoom class that you could join together? Or just a specific Zoom date, like cook the same dessert? In case she's not quite ready to join an in-person class and get out of the house. I like @caitcat:'s ideas, too. Maybe also a cozy blanket and some lighter DVDs/movies?

I gave my mom Getchen Rubin's The Happiness Project shortly after my dad died. She's not a big reader, but she liked it. I'm trying to think of some other fun and light books. Maybe The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary. The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood is a great light read! Come Fly the World by Julia Cooke is also good if your mom is into travel.

I'm sorry for your loss

I'm so sorry for your loss, SweetCaroline.

In addition to some of the great ideas above, and sort of heading into the sillier lane opened up by Corduroy, what about a jumbo Squishmallow to give her something to cuddle with/fill up the empty space in the bed? Or just a body pillow if your mom wouldn't appreciate the whimsy.

Does your mom already have a smart speaker of some kind? That might be nice if she's adjusting to a newly quiet house. You can show her how to access music, or subscribe her to a bunch of podcasts that you think she might like.

I'm sorry for your loss. This is going to get weird but since you asked for off the wall...

The year my mom's parents passed my mom was having a really hard time with Mother's Day (which I'm not trying to equate to losing your spouse and not Christmas). I struggled with what to get her and thought about what she liked. She really likes beards, including DH's. I don't remember why but we ended up blowing up a picture of DH, gluing his beard trimmings to it, and framing it. Seems unfathomable now but this was pre-kids and we must have been way weirder then.

I wrapped it up very nicely and gave it to my very mom on her very solemn mother's day not really knowing what to expect since we never give weird/funny gifts. She LOVED it. She laughed so hard for so long (even though she also thought it was a little gross). She ended up displaying the picture in my grandparents living room while she wrapped up all their business and got ready to sell the house - much to the shock/horror of the rest of the family.

So, do you know anyone with a beard? Just kidding, you'd need your own oddball idea.

I am so sorry for your family's loss. Your ideas for your mom so far sound lovely to me too.

We're giving some puzzles from this company this year: https://jiggypuzzles.com/ I thought the puzzles and packaging were really pretty as a gift.

Does she like art? Maybe a paint by number kit or other art kit? My SIL recently sent me one of these (https://pinkpicassokits.com/) and it looks like fun.

My aunt got really into these miniature model room kits over the last few years as a craft/hobby: https://www.amazon.com/miniature-room-kit/s?k=miniature+room+kit

Ideas for cooking: My brother gave me a subscription to NY Times Cooking a couple years ago and I've found so many recipes I love. It's nice to see fresh ideas without having to look real hard.

My mom does a flower arranging kit that's delivered monthly through a local florist each winter. She always comments how fun it is to learn a bit about arranging the flowers and to have something bright and cheery to enjoy for a bit afterward, especially when it's darker and chillier outside. Hers is local, but there might be a subscription thing like that that ships if she's into flowers?

I’m so sorry about your father. I wonder if there are any meal prep services that do single portions, so that she could still cook but not be left with so much food. Is there something you think she would like that would get her out of the house? What about an art class—even an online one? Or a mambership to a local museum or something like that.

Sorry for your loss, so difficult, especially with the holidays. I love your ideas so far as well as the PP's idea of classes. Something to get outside of the house. If she doesn't already knit or crochet, what about a beginner kit for one of those? Something new to try that can be done while watching TV. I've also seen really neat art felting kits.

So sorry for the loss of your father. It’s so hard losing someone. I know you mentioned a small town but what about any classes? Like a barre class or yoga class? I like your ideas you mentioned so far.

My dad passed away a couple weeks ago and my mom is learning what her life looks like without him, after 40+ years together. His death was unexpected.

I am trying to think of Christmas gifts for her. She knows my dad would want us to celebrate Christmas for the kids. I am looking for things that are comforting, solo hobbies, or perhaps new things to learn. She lives in a very small town with few resources. She loves to cook, but that will look different now, cooking for one person. My ideas so far are: nice pajamas, a nice throw blanket, puzzle, suduko, happy books.

I would very much appreciate specific ideas or off the wall ideas. Thank you
