@78h2o: I always default to Target giftcards. You ALWAYS need stuff from Target! Or maybe amazon giftcard? They say giftcards are impersonal, but if you're just getting to know them and honestly .. i LOVE gift cards. Or diapers. I big box of diapers. I used to go on walks with the baby in the stroller with another neighbor of mine who also gave birth a week after me.

We met loads of the neighbours by me gardening in the front garden, people stopped to chat on the way past.

We recently moved in and the peoe
Across the street had a baby soon after. We had talked briefly a few times before the baby was born. I made an apple pound cake which is usually a crowd pleaser and there aren't any nuts or anything so it's fairly safe.

@78h2o: I'd look up something on Yelp that's like... Chili's or Cheesecake-esque. Or pizza. It's hard to guess what people like, but I think everyone likes pizza :)

@HabesBabe: @rattles: definitely going to do the card from LO. I'll have her draw something.

@youboots: That's a good point.

@HabesBabe: That's a good idea, though I'm stumped on what place to pick. Hard to know what people like!

I would get them a gift card to a local family-friendly restaurant that delivers. That way, they can have food without having to heat anything up or they can take their first family trek out for a meal in a restaurant. A card from LO would be cute, too.

I think food is a nice gesture, but so many people have food preferences/allergies and are too polite to tell you. Maybe a fruit basket to be safe :)

@Mamaof2: oooh, I just saw some adorable Trumpette socks at Home Goods... that's a good idea! @rattles: I like the blueberry muffin idea, thanks! Maybe I will offer a meal too... but I worry they would just decline. I know I would have said I was fine.

@Mamaof2: Also, I'm glad to hear you appreciated the gesture. You are giving me confidence that they won't think I'm a weirdo. I get shy about this kind of stuff with people I don't really know.

Our neighbor that we didn't know super well brought over some Trumpette socks for DD - I loved the socks and the gesture!

The only other young couple in our building had a baby earlier this year. I brought blueberry muffins, an outfit (with gift receipt), and a card from LO. They're probably running out of freezer/friend meals but not quite yet in the swing of things, so maybe offering to bring by a meal would be a nice idea instead.

We had great neighbors in the house directly behind us (their yard back up to ours)... however, they moved away last year when our LO was just a few months old. A young couple moved in, but we were lame and didn't really go over to meet them (it was also the dead of winter). We said hello over the fence once or twice. They had a party once and told us over the fence to let them know if it got too loud, etc. I noticed a couple months ago that the wife was pregnant, and then a few weeks ago saw a baby balloon on their mailbox. I wasn't sure if it was from a shower or whether the baby had been born.

Anyway, last night my daughter was running around the back yard and was trying to talk to the neighbor. He came over and asked how old she was, what her name was, etc. I asked if his wife had had the baby and he said yes, 3 weeks ago. We talked about life adjusting to baby and shared a few laughs. He seemed very nice and mentioned that maybe when his son is a little older, the kids could play together. This would make me really happy as they are the only couple with young kids that live anywhere nearby... most of the families have kids in high school.

So, now they we've finally had a real conversation with them (albeit, short), I thought the neighborly thing to do would be to stop by and bring them something for the new baby... maybe baked goods of some sort and some kind of gift? Any ideas? I don't know anything about them other than they seem quiet, both run a lot, and are neat freaks (that came up in our conversation when we were talking about baby gear).

In addition to gift ideas, anyone have advice for getting to know the neighbors in general?? I feel bad that we've lived in our house for 2 years and don't really know anyone. The only people we were really getting to know happened to be the ones that moved.
