Last year I made my grandma a calendar (shutterfly). I used pictures of all of her family. One page might be all couple photos, another was grabdbabies, some pages were just random photo spreads... she loved it. Made her cry in a good way!

This year I'm sending her gourmet chocolates. My policy for her is something edible if nothing perfect springs to mind, like the calendar.

When my grandmother was alive, I always gave her really soft new pajamas/lounge wear and a yummy box of chocolates. For DH's grandmother, we usually send her a big box of Mrs. Field's cookies that she can share with her "neighbors" (she lives in a home) and a desk calendar with pictures of LO.

@tinyperson: Great idea! This reminds me that we did a wooden birthday "calendar" off Etsy a few years ago with hanging tags for everyone's birthday. We've had two new births since then so we could definitely update it for her as part of her gift.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Keep them coming. These are some great ideas and I'll run some of them past my DH and SIL. She's a challenge to buy for as she already has quite a bit. I love the salon idea, but she gets her hair done by a family member so that's out too. These ideas are getting me thinking though!

My aunt is difficult to buy for, so I always get her a Harry and David fruit subscription. I do the 3 month "light size" boxes and it's perfect. Sometimes, the delivery is a pineapple or 6 pears. It's just enough

@LemonJack: we used to get my grandma high quality meat and seafood. Everyone has to eat! I'd get grass fed beef patties, frozen lobster, crab, shrimp. This one is easily adaptable to whatever you can afford.

I would also get my grandma high quality coffee and tea. Basically, high-quality consumables to make her feel like a queen.

My Papa was one of those people who didn't want or need anything so I started getting him gifts from Plan International (or something similar) - a goat, or a flock of ducks, or something. I'd wrap the card with a nice tin of cookies. He loved it.

I could see my mom being a hip elderly grandma. Thinking along those lines nicer costume jewelry, nail polish with matching lipsticks (even better if you can have a manicurist come to her house at least once), and newer kitchen things like tea towels just to freshen up her space.

The best gift I've gotten for my parents/grandparents has been a Nixplay... it's a digital picture frame that you can wirelessly send photos to. So on my grandmothers for example , my cousins and I all regularly send new photos to it of the great grand kids. She loves seeing new photos pop up especially of the kids who live far away and she doesn't get to see very often.

Does she like to read or enjoy audiobooks? You could get her a subscription to Audible if she's reasonably tech savvy. Or set her up with some e-books on her ipad. My mom loves ereaders because she can make the text huge.

@LemonJack: I would do something with photos, like a calendar or a mug or a mouse pad!
O know you said no going out but is there anyway you could get her an experience gift? At her age she'd probably more enjoy spending time with loved ones than an object!

Any ideas for gifts for my DH's grandma? She's in her early 80's. She's pretty with it; has and uses an iPad regularly, and is probably online more than me! She's had a rough year health wise with some illnesses that were hard to kick, so I don't want to get her a certificate to go out to eat or anything like that. I'm at a total loss, and so is DH. She has everything she really needs! Any thoughts or suggestions you've done with your own grandparents?
