@Foodnerd81: we have the one that says 7+ on it. It has the two full decks of cards and uses the cards as the playing spaces. I didn’t even know there was a kids version. My DD got it for her 6th birthday so she needed a little help with the strategy at first but totally got the idea of the game without help.

This is the amazon link for the one we have:

@MamaCate: @2PeasinaPod: sequence for kids or the regular one for this age? The not “for kids” one looks so grown up but kids says 3-6 or something.

@2PeasinaPod: yeah I really like it too. It is a nice change of pace from some of the less interesting ones she has—she got codenames too but she isn’t quite old enough to really play it well so it is duuuullll 😛

@MamaCate: I second Sequence! It's a fun game to play with DS1 as there's a little bit of strategy involved.

If he loves to read, could you do a book or magazine subscription? When I was his age I had a Babysitters Club book membership that mailed books, and my brother has one for Goosebumps.

Just popping in to say that we got my nephew a minecraft wallet (in addition to a book he'd asked for) for his 7th birthday, and it was a HIT. I think it made him feel very grown-up, lol, he loved it.

@dolphin: we got a board game called sequence as a gift for my 6 y.o. DDs birthday this year. It is a definite step up from little kid board games and I like it a lot. I would recommend it!

I'd go with K'nex. Our nephew exclaimed they were "the best gift" and they became the hit of the party. They're super fun to build with and you can get a decent set for your price point. They're different enough from Legos and not something a kid knows to ask for.

For 6-7 year old boys, our default go-to gift is almost always Lego with gift receipt.

If you need a filler gift (on top of the Legos), I'd get a cheap spirograph box (they used to have it for a little while at Target for $5), or recently DH found the game "Battle Ship" (which DS loves) for $5 at walmart.

My son is 6+ and I think he is obsessed with the idea of spirograph (we just have yet to buy him a decent set lol). He is an early reader, and nowadays we just keep playing Scrabble on a daily basis, so that's something to think about. For really intellectual kids, I'd go shop at Barnes and Noble and find a really big and nice book (on top of some knick-knack filler gifts). We recently bought a book which talks about gears and how things work for a friend's 6 year old birthday. There are actual gears they can turn and play around. DS would have claimed it if I let him! When we were younger DS has gotten a big dinosaur anatomy book, a Nat Geo book about places on earth, a Richard Scarry book (when he was younger) and those are also very nice.

The illustrated Hobbit by Jemima Caitlin is fantastic. Or one of the illustrated Harry Potter books, if he hasn't already read them.
