Hmmmmm, if it is something he likes then I guess that would make it a good present. My DH would just laugh and ask where the real present is.

We give my FIL cookbooks all the time for his birthday. He loves to cook and does more cooking then my MIL.

My Dad loves plants and his yard so we give him gardening stuff all the time as gifts.

My brother is a bit "homy" aka he likes a nice house so its not uncommon for my mom to give him a house plant or something like that. I do think sending a bouquet of flowers might be a bit odd.

I don't think it's odd to give a man those things, if that's what he's into. I think it's strange to give anyone something that they wouldn't enjoy. It would be like DH giving me golf clubs. Not because it's more of a manly thing (although, I don't think that about golf at all) but more because I don't like golf and he does.

I've been wondering about this for the longest time but have always been afraid someone I know will read it so I end up putting it off.

Do men in your family typically get cookbooks, flowers, plants or generally "feminine" gifts for their birthday or holidays?

I've never even heard of this before and the guys I know back home would think it's a joke if someone were to do it. But it's the norm for DH and BIL. MIL and SIL always seem to gift them plants, flowers, cookbooks, basically things they themselves like. DH doesn't think it's odd at all since it's all that he knows. This man loves movies, video games, and although he likes plants, he doesn't really like them that much and isn't really into cooking. Surely they know this ... I just don't get it.

Is it as unusual as I think it is?
