@Mrs. Bee: that is so cool - that's a neat idea.

I agree that something personalized would be nice. Even just little keepsakes like a personalized album, keepsake box, towel, wall art etc would be cute.

i love Mrs. Bee's idea- so creative and different!

Also consider maybe getting something for the mother? Transitioning to two kids is a lot - maybe a spa gift card or something similar?

Ditto honeybee's ideas... gift basket of toiletries is a good suggestion. DD 2 got a personalized hooded towel from PBK that was a nice an useful gift too.

I also like to give gifts that cover the entire first year, even the later half of the first year, because so many people tend to give newborn things. So I'd also give things like bowls, plates and utensils sets (I like the ones by Oxo Tot and Skip Hop). These are also things my eldest held on to for herself (like bath towels), that I got new for DD 2.

I have a second baby shower to go to this weekend; I asked the mom what she needed and she wouldn't give me any ideas! So here's what I came up with:

I'm making her a freezer meal of chicken enchiladas for after the baby is born.

I'm also bringing her a basket of bath stuff including: baby shampoo, baby lotion, a package of washcloths, a couple new hooded towels, and a little tiny baby bathrobe I found at the store. Awwwwwww!

(From my own experience, anything consumable, like toiletries/diapers/wipes, is very much appreciated, as are replacements of necessities, like blankets/burp cloths/bottle nipples/etc....).

personalized things like towels are also nice since the second child will get so many hand-me-downs.

how about a subscription to wittlebee? i'm definitely going to be giving that to some friends!

What about another set of receiving/swaddling blankets? My cousin's daughter loves ALL her receiving blankets (they're her lovies) so when the mom tried to "give" some to her new baby brother she wouldn't allow it. Even if her mom washed the old and new ones together, the lil girl was able to identify which ones were hers.

What do you guys typically give to a second born child? This child is the opposite gender, so obviously clothes would be appreciated, but they have most of the gear they need. Any special gifts you can think of?

I thinking about getting them some new paci's and bottles since those are always nice to have "new". Baby's don't really play with "toys" at this age so there isn't much new to buy there. Anything else?
