@Jess1483: what about a photo session of just them and your kids? Or a cooking with kids kit? I think the subscription box sounds fun. My parents would like your ideas and would not see it as me making them babysit. They ask for DS all the time and get bummed when we pick him up early.

@Charm54: I gave my mom a digital frame a few years ago and regularly re-load. But they do like it!

I totally get what people are saying about doing things with the kids, but truly, I think my parents would be offended if I gave them a gift certificate just for them. They know money is tight since we just bought a house and they already do whatever they want.. I can try to think harder, but they actually ask us when they can keep DS1 overnight (usually weekly). I thought the subscription box would give my mom something to do with them when she already has them, not like I'm asking for them to take the boys more often! I'll keep thinking. I do have some handmade stuff to give them as well, I was just trying to come up with something additional.

I agree with a gift that's just for them. I like the digital picture frame idea. Or what about a brag book with pictures of them and all their grandkids?

Honestly their favorite things are the most random handmade items! Last year I made FIL a card with a grandparent saying and the girls two footprints. He absolutely loved it and ended up framing it and putting it up!

I got my parents a nixplay digital frame last year - they lOVE it. You can add pictures wirelessly so my sisters and I regularly send new pics even though we are spread out across the country. They love seeing new pics pop up. Best gift I ever bought them, and they are SO hard to shop for!

I guess I would probably avoid a gift for them that involves doing something with your kids. I'm sure they wouldn't take it this way but to me that says "here, I bought you a gift that requires you to babysit/entertain my child for me in order for you to enjoy it". I would try to get them something that is really just for them. Gift certificate for some kind of lesson they could do together like cooking or dancing? Or if you wanted something more family focused what about a photography session with the whole family (including any siblings and nieces/nephews you have)?

@ALV91711: We're pretty much members everywhere you can go. We live in a pretty small city, so there aren't a ton of options.

I'm looking at maybe a subscription box with activities to do with DS. Anyone have experience with Kidstir?

I did photo books this year and DS did a painting.

What about a pass to a local attraction that tegu ca take the kids too. Then it could be a fun day out.

@gingerbebe: Yeah. They'll get a calendar. They just have so many of those (I do them for every occasion.) So I'm looking for a new idea ;)

I'm looking for a unique gift idea for my parents. They do SO much for us, and they don't really need anything. (Oh, they asked for a ladle...)

Getting them gift cards is weird, because they'd probably be upset we were spending money on them (and they don't need them.) Kind of the same with gifts in general. So we were thinking of creating some kind of "experience" gift for them involving the boys (DS1 is 3 and DS2 is 6 months the week before Christmas). My first idea was a "break the rules" day, where they can spoil the crap out of DS1 (their favorite activity.) They generally follow caretaker rules rather than grandparent rules because they have him so often (mom does part time child care). But DH nixed that.

So any similar ideas? We're doing a couple small DIY gifts/crafts in addition (a calendar and a cute ornament.) And I'll probably get the ladle, too...
