Hell no. I didn't know parents actually did this! How does this help your child?

We don't and won't do this. I don't understand the "left out" mentality. It's not that child's birthday, they are supposed to be left out! I'd definitely tell my in laws not to do that again.

Yeah, no.

I grew up with a family that lived behind us and they did this b/c "it's not fair". Maybe it's just because we really didn't like that family but they were just awful people. I mean, even as a young child I knew that the way they were raised was going to cause issues for the kids later in life. I won't even go into details. But yes, that's me, judging parental decisions from a young age. ;)

NO. My brother pulled that sh*t on us last year. My daughter was unwrapping her gifts and he gave his son some gifts to open, as well. Stupid, coddling behavior. @regberadaisy: you know my strong feelings on this. ;-)

I agree with pp and have no intention of ever doing this. That said, my mom did it for me one time when I was like 12. It wasn't because I couldn't understand that it was my brothers day, my mom just really enjoys gift giving and she knew I would be shocked to receive anything on that day. It was before his party and she told me it was because I was such a good sister. lol it never happened again though and I never expected it to.

Nope! A friend did this at DS' birthday and I thought it was so unnecessary. Kids need to learn!

Totally agree with you. Only the birthday kid should get gifts. Other children need to learn at some point that it's not always about them and that other kids get a special day too, just like them.

Of course, Xander just thinks that gifts given to Logan are really meant to be shared anyway... :P

I'm not a fan of this and wouldn't do it either (I know some parents that do). Kids need to learn how to handle other people getting presents and attention.

Do any of you do this? Buy a gift for your other kids on one kids birthday?

We do not do this and don't ever plan to. A birthday is your special day and you shouldn't have to share that with a sibling.
My inlaws got DD1 a small present on DD2's birthday last year because they didn't want her to feel left out. I think this year I'm going to make a point to ask them not to. DD1 is going to be 4 and I don't want her thinking this is a norm and expecting a small gift every time someone else celebrates a birthday!

What are your thoughts?
