We definitely have this problem. Last year we re-gifted a lot of DS1's bigger stuff and told DS1 that "santa must have known how much you liked it and gotten the same thing for your brother". I think it worked, but it definitely wouldn't work this year and he would know something was up.

Anyway, we just try to get stuff that can add on to big brothers collections.....more Thomas trains, duplos/legos, magformers, etc. They can always use more of those.

What about personalized gifts? Like the Lost my Name book or a name puzzle?

As a baby we just gave our older LO's toys as Christmas gifts. It gets a bit easier as they get older and have different interests. My second LO loves puzzles and that's something I don't mind having several different ones. We got him a tricycle because his brother is still using the one we have. And other new toys or toys you didn't get or were off season during gift giving times. I think we got LO2 a play table and a water table. Toys that you have 1 of but they could use together, like dolls or big trucks or ride on toys.

I have no problem wrapping up a second-hand toy to give LO on a holiday, if it's a nice item. I just keep things hidden so they can enjoy the surprise.

I picked out a few essentials that could use updating - our shape sorter is missing pieces, puzzles are missing pieces, need a new stacker. And then I'm getting a few things I wish I had for DD1 or just found and think are cool (an inflatable water mat is on my list). Thats really it though. She's only going to be 7 months so she won't know!

I was just thinking about this too. I have an almost 3 year old with a birthday next week and a 3 month old. I kept all of LO1's toys, so I plan to bring them out as appropriate. For this year I'm thinking of maybe just getting her an activity cube and nothing else. She can't open presents and won't know the difference. Anything I buy her will just add to the mountains of stuff we already have.

At this point she doesn't care if what she has is new or not. I mean really, does it even matter if her brother played with the baby toys for a few months? They'll now be "hers" when we pull them out of the closet. When she gets a little older and has toy preferences I'll invest more in buying presents for her.

Facing this as well. DD1 is 3years old, DD2 is 8 mos old.

DD1 now gets slightly nicer clothing (non basics) as I know it will get used a second time around.

DD2 gets some more "frivolous" pieces since I dont have to buy her much at all.

For toys, we have some things we did not know about last time around, or some things DD1 loved to death - literally...trashed. So we have put those on her list. Also - newer versions of things we had - like our play food is really poor quality and my dog has chewed half of it...so I have the replacement as an item for DD2.

@erinbaderin: sound blocks? Please share!

I'm in the process of getting rid of toys even though LO2 could still play with it because we have too many toys and we have both LOs birthdays and Christmas coming, so I'm sure we will get more.

I'm facing this now. My Christmas list for him has some stuff that I didn't know about the first time around (like those sound blocks from a recent blog post) or things that I would have liked to get but couldn't justify since he already has so many toys (an activity cube, a wheelie bug). Also some joint presents like a train table and easel that he won't use for a while.

If you have two (especially the same gender) what do you do about gifts for the younger one? We have tons of toys as hand me downs from older brother, but I want him to have his own toys too... It doesn't seem right that he would never get anything new...I'd love to hear what you did.
