It depends on the person- some of my very close friends and family like stuff like that and I will get them things I am 99% sure they don't already have. For DD's kiddo friends, I try to get things from stores that issue gift receipts or ask before I buy since kids get SO MANY THINGS and I would prefer to get them something they actually want.

As a gift receiver, I will just quietly donate anything that doesn't work for me and my kids. I try to make sure anything my MIL buys gets worn over to her house at least once before I get rid of it :silly:

I think most kids have enough toys. So if it's a duplicate or unwanted then just donate or regift. I buy a lot of toys on sale and don't always have a receipt.

I don't expect gift receipts when my kids get presents, and the majority of their presents don't include them. If my kids don't particularly like the gift or already have one, I just donate it or regift it.

If it's for an adult I think it's fine. For kids though, unless you've cleared the gift with the parents don't make it hard to return.

Thanks, everyone! Good point about knowing your audience. I'll try my best to avoid glittery Bible music boxes :) When I was around 11 years old, my adult cousin gave me a ceramic cat menorah for Hanukkah, saying that she thought it was perfect for me. I was super offended :)
I'm glad to know that most people don't mind gifts that aren't necessarily easily returned. I figure that, at least for kids' birthdays, most presents are easily re-gifted if the kid already has something similar.

I think it's great to support small and local businesses. Just try to pick something that isn't a glittery music box with Bible quotes! Or you know, equivalent. Try to pick out something that's more universally useful.

Totally depends on the gift. For some strange reason, I don't mind most things but my pet peeve is clothes. Clothes just feel so personal to me, and inevitably I dislike 90% of what other people buy for me and for DD (and starting now, for future DS). We also get tons of handmade clothes and I never know what to do with them all.

Honestly, since it's a gift and I didn't buy it I have no problem re-gifting it, giving it to charity or more often than not just throwing it away.

For a baby shower gift I got a large, glittery music box with Bible quotes on it that played Jesus Loves You. And we aren't religious. It was a ROYAL PAIN to return it to a small, local store.

Know your audience, and all will be fine!

Oh and as a recipient, it depends on the gift. Particularly if it is something you can use multiples of, like scarves or jewelry boxes or something, I don't mind. My MIL has good taste but always includes gift receipts unless it's from a small local shop. I have actually returned a few things, even though I liked them, because I had something really similar.

Depends on the recipient. I know some people who are so picky (my sister and my husband) that I will almost never give them something unless they can return it easily. Other people I know are less picky and like more unique or quirky things and would appreciate that kind of thing.

I know I don't have to change my gift giving style for the recipient, but I also don't want to spend money and time on a gift that they are just going to donate or stash in a closet for years.

I used to never think it was annoying (and actually enjoyed it) until my son got 3 piggy banks with his name on them. Can't return them or regift!

Totally fine!

You don't need to go out of your way or change your gift-buying preferences to ensure that your recipients can return your gifts. If they already have something, they can donate the extra one.

If you're buying something you can't get in stores (hand crafted etc), then I don't mind. I usually really like that kind of present.

But if it is something that can be bought in a big box store, I'd rather have a gift receipt.

What do people think about getting gifts that are not easily returned? I like the idea of buying gifts for birthdays and the holidays from local small businesses, but they aren't easily returned for people who live in other cities or even nearby towns. I worry that if it's a gift that someone doesn't like, or if they already have something similar, that they will think it's annoying. I know it's the thought that counts, but do people prefer to get gifts from larger chains so that you can return it easily?
