@Danizaur: I will keep my advice short and sweet:

Don't compare your baby's sleep to another baby's *reported* sleep times/totals (the accuracy of shared sleep information is always suspect in my book . . . I will leave it at that)

Lower your expectations for sleep. I would have given pretty much anything for 45 minutes naps at that age! As few as 10 minutes of sleep can be restorative sleep for a LO.

Lower your expectations for yourself. It's only been two months! It's one heck of a learning curve to figure out EVERYTHING in two months (things change so often and so quickly).

Here's an update. T miraculously fixed his naps for me today. He's getting lots of sleep. I've noticed he's definitely been much happier and content playing by himself today. Usually he needs to be held, cuddled, talked to, etc during awake time to be somewhat satisfied.

Woke up at 5am to eat and didn't go straight back to sleep (idk why. A fluke I guess)
Slept from 6am-7am then got up for the day and ate
Napped at 8:30 for about 30-40 mins
Napped from 12-3
Napped from 4-5
Nursed and just went down for another nap around 6:15 and is still asleep as of 6:30

Problem solved. You are dismissed. Haha
(Until tomorrow when this all goes to hell. Hahaha)

Doesn't sound wrong to me. Then again my LO has fought naps from day 1 and still does (6 months old now). Her naps are 20 minutes long and she doesn't take many. She used to STTN until 10 weeks old, now we enjoy night wakeups every 2-4 hours.

I used to worry about her lack of sleep but things got better for me when I stopped trying to make LO conform to what's recommended or "typical" or whatnot. It is what it is. My baby thinks sleep is for the weak and I just have to roll with that.

My son is 9 weeks and is very similar... in fact I'm just now starting to even try some kind of a schedule...before now, he just kind of slept whenever and I didn't pay attention to how long he was sleeping. He's starting to fight naps so sometimes I have to hold him until he falls asleep (he likes to be held upright) and then put him down. It's frustrating because he goes to bed really well at night and sleeps really well then. So basically I'm no help, since I'm going through the same thing!

@Danizaur: I suspect he's probably fine! And the fact he was getting two 45 minute naps plus a 3 hour nap during the day is awesome. It sounds totally normal! I wouldn't try to force him to nap earlier than he's ready, but maybe around 1.5 hours awake, start your nap routine? Or even 15 minutes before the 2 hour mark? I don't have any advice on how to help him sleep though - that was the one thing Xander could always do on his own. We would just put him in his swing and he's just lay there until he fell asleep.

Mine is 10 weeks and all she does is cat nap too. I'm usually able to get her to go to sleep after she wakes up by rocking and bouncing her until she falls sleep and put her back down. This only works for one of her naps though usually. She started doing these short naps right after she turned 8 weeks.

@Danizaur: That 5:00 - 9:00 thing is soooooooo normal I think. Xander ALWAYS did that at that age. He always wanted to just clusterfeed then and was totally a fuss-bucket, but wouldn't sleep. Very very very normal!!!

No advice about the rest of the day though! But here's Xander at 8 weeks exactly:

5:45 a.m. - wake, nurse (20 min)
6:12 - sleep (2 hr)
8:12 - wake, nurse (22 min)
10:06 - sleep (55 min)
11:01 - wake, nurse (33 min)
12:24 p.m. - sleep (1 hr 50 min)
2:14 - wake, nurse (30 min)
3:57 - sleep (40 min)
4:37 - wake, nurse (25 min)
6:30 - nurse (25 min)
8:30 - nurse (40 min)
9:21 - sleep (4 hr)

Notice he was awake from 4:37 p.m. to 9:21 p.m. and nursed 3 times during that time! And his other awake times ranged from 1.5 - 2 hours with a bunch of cat naps!

@Adira: Hes fussy a lot, fights nursing and fights his naps. He's awake from 5pm til 9pm sometimes and I know that's way too much. Yeah we have a swing. It doesn't help much. He fights sleep in the pack and play, swing, my arms, everything.

@Danizaur: What makes you think he needs more sleep? Is he pretty fussy when he's awake? Or is he just fighting naps? And do you have a swing? I think at that age, I used to just plop Xander in the swing and turn it on and he'd eventually pass out.

@Danizaur: Oh gosh, LO is 2 years old i still feel like i need a manual!! @Adira makes a good point that all babies have different awake times. Mine actually had to go down within 1 hour of waking up...so that meant 10 minutes of diaper changes, 30 minutes of nursing and 10 minutes of awake time before getting her ready for her next nap. You can fiddle around with the awake times until you get a better sense of how much awake time your baby can handle.

The first nap of the day is key for us. She wakes up around 5:30-6, and we feed, change, and put her right back down. We don't even take her out of the bedroom. I treat it as more of a "continuation of night sleep"

The first droopy eye, yawn, or whine starts nap routine for us too.

Do you have a nap routine? It might help to have one also.

I don't really have any advice, but I went and reread your other post and saw that a lot of people said that your LO should only be awake for 1-1.5 hours tops. I just went and checked my records, and at 8 weeks, Xander was usually awake for 1.5-2 hours before he went down for a nap.

Some babies just sleep less! Xander was totally happy and content and would've just fought me if I tried putting him down earlier!

Some babies do need more help than others falling asleep, but just because OTHER babies can't stay awake for 2 hours at 8 weeks doesn't mean that YOURS can't either. Just wanted to offer another perspective!

unfortunately, 45 minute naps are sooo common at that age- no matter what you do it seems! I know it sucks- it felt like I was constantly doing a nap routine all day because LO needed so many naps because they were only 45 minutes. They consolidated a bit around 3 months and she started napping for sometimes an hour or more, and then they consolidated even more around 6 months. so all of this is to say, sometimes you can still do everything right- put them down at right time, etc, and they will still take short naps. i think its a developmental thing.

Also- sometimes when my LO would take a short nap at that age, when she woke up I would put her in a carrier and she would fall back asleep for a bit or even the stroller.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong, but i think you have to be more patient. It took a couple of weeks of maintaining that routine for my LO to go down easily for naps. I'm sure there are other bees who can even confirm that their LOs wouldn't nap unless held. I would keep at it for another week, and then see if you need another strategy.

From 8-12ish weeks, a lot of her naps were in the Ergo and stroller, and then i started being more consistent with crib naps which helped. Good luck!

I posted a thread the other day and a lot of bees said my baby (8 weeks old tomorrow and 2 months old on Monday) isn't getting enough sleep. I have to agree now that they've pointed it out.
He fights his naps because he's overtired. I'm not putting him down for his naps early enough. I'm just so confused. He woke up at 6:30am this morning for the day like usual. I tried to get him down earlier before he started showing his overtired cues but even when I did he fought his nap and wouldn't go to sleep and didn't go down until almost 8:30 like he has been which is way too late.

He slept for about 45 mins and then fell asleep after nursing around 10:00. I moved him off the nursing pillow and laid him down. He woke up and still fought sleep and wouldn't go down easy. He finally went down about 10:30 but popped back awake 10 minutes later. What am I doing wrong? He needs sleep but won't sleep!!
