I feel like the first two months of running (5-6x a week) are the hardest. Even after I get into running "shape", the first 20 minutes of running are always annoying - not bad, but not great and once I pass that, I can usually get the runners high and it's great. It's how I destress so I'm trying to get back there now!

Power to you if you can keep up running every day!

But if life intervenes, I found that as long as I committed to exercising 4 days/week, the off days seemed like the exception rather than the rule, and I started to think of myself as "a runner."

Also, I now know that I can survive stomach pains and they will go away after a bit!

Use a heart rate monitor. When I started running, I was running way too fast and got burnt out quickly. I actually enjoy running through the streets. I find the distraction keeps me from focusing too much on the running aspect. Over the years, I've come to enjoy the serenity of running. I don't even need to listen to music because running is really the only time I'm left with just my thoughts these days. And I periodically sign up for races so I have a goal to work on. Once you finish your first race, you become hooked.

It depends on what kind of runner you are. What got me going was running with a friend or group. I also agree signing up for a race will help motivate you to stay on track with your running routine.

I would also suggest that you not do too much too soon. So don't increase mileage and speed at the same time - recipe for injury! Also, you may want to have rest days.

I like Hal Higdon - here is a link to his novice program. http://www.halhigdon.com/training/50933/Novice-Training-for-your-first-5K

Good luck!

For me, signing up for races was good motivation! Maybe start with a 5k, then 10k, then half! It feels good to have a goal to strive for. A beautiful view, good weather, and good music are great too but sounds like you've got those covered! I can't run on the treadmill for the life of me, but can go for miles outdoors.

Couch to 5k worked for me. But I'm so bad at getting motivated.

Following this thread!

I've hated running pretty much my entire life because I would get really bad stomach cramps within a minute or two. But they seemed to have subsided in my 30s. And one glorious time when I was in shape pre-kids, I ran on the treadmill and at 45 minutes I experienced runner's high. I want that feeling again!

I just started running every day this week. I've been running after the kids eat dinner but before bedtime. It is my absolute favorite time when the sun is setting, so I've been enjoying it more than anticipated. I listen to music and run along the park, where there are lots of other runners at that time.

Do you have any tips so I can become a better runner? How did you run faster/longer? What is your running routine?
