I check downloaded checkout 51 and ibotta; two apps that give you money for specific products. I also second shopkick - it's super easy and pays out quickly!

@dagret: I love Pinecone! They are recruiting new sign ups if anyone is interested (NOT a referral link) https://www.pineconeresearch.com/Signup/Signup_Form.aspx They are nice because they only send surveys that they're going to pay you for; and send tester questions that take less than 5 minutes infrequently.

See what you can cut from groceries! Going cheap for 3 months and eating lots of beans would help :)

Drink water as much as possible. Cutting out soda, alcohol, juices, etc can help trim your grocery bill. If you go out to eat, not ordering a soda can save you about $2.50 per person off your bill, plus a little extra savings in the amount you would pay in taxes and tip if you had the sodas added on.

Can you use a credit card responsibly? e.g. Pretend it is cash and pay it off 100% every month, without fail?

If so, get a good cash rebate card like the Chase Freedom, Fidelity Visa or Amex or Capital One Quiksilver. You can earn a minimum of 1.5% back on every purchase. Once you hit a min cashback threshold ($25 I think), you can request a check from the Chase Freedom card. The Fidelity Visa & Amex are $50 thresholds and go directly into a Fidelity account (e.g. 529, brokerage, IRA). Not sure about the Capital One card since I don't have it.

If you can't pay off the card every month, then this idea wouldn't be a good one. You'll end up paying more in interest than you would get in rewards.

Random ideas:

Look at the sales flyer before you menu plan. Safeway has a great coupon app.

Make veggie stock from veggie scraps. (Google for tips)

Bu the big yogurt had instead of little ones.

Use ebates for online shopping.

Skip fresh berries or other fruits that aren't in season and use more frozen ones.

Sell old books you won't read again.

@Danizaur: the biggest change we made to our budget recently was switching out of our unlimited data plan with sprint. we broke contract to do it, but our cell phone bill this month was $29 for the two of us. compare that to our old bill of $132/month and it's a huuuge savings. i recently blogged about this experience.

I second @looch re gardening. We have a winter garden right now (granted we live in CA) and have all of our greens for salads available whenever we want. We also have a spring/summer garden and we rarely have to buy produce during the summer months. Next year I'm hoping to have enough to freeze (last year was our first year). We also get fruit from neighbors and freeze it to use for smoothies during the rest of the year.

I do: swagbucks, upromise (goes directly to my student loan), PineCone Research ($3/per survey), couponing (both regular and stockpiling),CVS extrabucks and Shopkick (you get points for walking into stores and scanning items - I've made $14 in Target giftcards.

Meal planning is HUGE.

I also pay myself first - i automated my savings, roth contributions and retirement. That really helps.

Good luck!

@grizz: Love Money Saving Mom!

I would def coupon for groceries/household items. I really like shopping at Target (if you have one close by) because you can stack their coupon with manufacturer coupon plus they have online coupons/saving passes!

Do you have any extra time? I signed up with Swagbucks ([Sorry, I had to remove this referral link per our self-promotion policy! - Mr. Bee]). I mostly fill out surveys and also make sure to go through them if I do any online shopping. In less than 6 months I already redeemed a $50 Target giftcard and right now I qualify for $25 already!

Off the top of my head...I have loyalty cards for literally everywhere; food shopping, petrol, cosmetics...also when I'm shopping online and I see an offer on shampoo or something for 50% off I'll buy several months worth.

You already cut tv, which is a good one!
*Closely examine your cell phone plan, and see where you can cut, or even if you can switch.
*Meal plan! And shop the grocery sales.
*Sell things you don't need/want/use. I made like $2,000 after our wedding just selling off table decorations etc.
*I read a lot of money saving blogs - Money Saving Mom, Living Well Spending Less, etc.

So I got the free trial version of YNAB today after seeing it talked about a lot on here and I am a changed person! I normally left all financial decisions up to DH and I really had no idea how little money we had. I'm trying to budget for next month using an estimated amount of income (living paycheck to paycheck from DH's paycheck. I'm on mat leave with no pay and go back to work in May) and I can cover our bills and a tiny amount of gas and food...so tiny I'm not sure we could meet that goal.

I hate to admit it but we've been pulling from our savings occasionally to make ends meet, but I didn't know we depended on it. I thought we were just spending too much (we were), but even after cutting out ALL spending money and eating out money I'm still not breaking even on bills, groceries, and gas.

It'll be much better in a couple of months when I go back to work and we pay off my car (3 more months!! That'll be $300 extra a month) but we have to make a change NOW. What are some extra ways to save and maybe even make a little extra cash to help us get ahead?

We are debt free except for our mortgage and car payment, and the car payment is almost gone. We've already cut out our $100 TV bill.

Give me your best tips! I'm so motivated to save save save!!
