My biggest tip is don't use pull ups. Use diapers for naps and overnight, but skip the pull ups, especially during the day.

@babycanuck: One tip I have is that for bowel movements, they're most likely to do one after a meal, so after every meal, you might want to sit him on the potty.

I would start implementing "pants free weekends", and be patient! Hopefully he'll catch on once there is no barrier!

@babycanuck: You could definitely wait. We didn't train until she was closer to 2.5 years. She was nowhere near ready at 21 months.

@babybunnylove: @catlady: Thank you!

It doesn't seem like this daycare "pushes" potty training, at least not in the room he's in and can be in until he's 3. They basically go by what we do, so they are putting him on the toilet to try, but if he doesn't go, it's okay. That's what I've been doing at home, too, put putting him on quite often, like once an hour.

He uses the words pee pee and kaka, though he doesn't tell us when he needs to go. Maybe I'm best doing what I'm doing, being consistent, until he's a little bit bigger? We haven't been using any sort of reward system.

Probably not a great tip, but what worked for us was waiting until a critical mass of kids at daycare were trained. We were planning on waiting for a long weekend to do the 3 day method but when 3 kids in DD's daycare got trained all around the same time, she asked to be trained too, so we just went with it and it worked great. We basically did the 3 day method over a 2 day weekend. We didn't need to bribe with candy or anything, peer pressure was enough.

I would also definitely go for it 100% when you are ready, not just putting the child on the potty every so often. It's hard at first but it works faster that way.

Make sure that the child is ready and can verbalize when they need to go. Pushing them into it if they aren't ready can be a lot more stressful. My first DD was potty training before 2, but the overnights took longer. My second DD potty trained when she was 2.5, but she took to it like a champ over a long weekend and didn't have any accidents and even did overnights all at once.

Hi mamas!

Hope everyone is doing well!

LO is 21 months, we are starting to put some emphasis on potty training. For about 7 months we have had the potty out, talked about it, sat him on it. In the last 3 months we've been more consistent with putting him on it while we get his bath ready in the evenings. Recently I started putting him on it every morning when he wakes up, and more often at home.

I have also asked daycare to start putting him on the potty there more often. Success is hit or miss, but that's what I expected. He does pee every time I put him on before bath time.

What are your tips to get the best experience with potty training?

I can't do the three day method, because we both work full time and only have him home for 2 days on the weekends. I could maybe do it on a long weekend.
