We did:
36 newborn GMD prefolds
5 covers (thirsties size 1 and flips)
a lot of wipes (bought 2 or 3 meters fabric and cut up)
Also a few NB swaddlebees (I think they are called Blueberry now- love them but for the amount of time we used NB diapers I'm not sure it's worth getting any of the AIOs).
Then later at least 24 of a onesize diaper of your choice. My preferred was BG Elemental, but we've also tried other ones.
A spray bottle with water (for the wipes, just wet as you go)
A couple large wet bags or pail liners for home and a couple medium for on the go.
Because everything we use on a regular basis is cotton inside, I didn't need special detergent or rash cream.

I decided to go with mostly pre-folds because they are pretty inexpensive.

For the newborn stage, we have:
5 Rumparooz covers
24 Diaper Rite newborn size pre-folds:
http://www.diaperjunction.com/diaper-rite-prefolds.html
4 snappi diaper closers

I'm washing them everyday to every day and a half.

I use this stuff now and will use it even after she grows out of the newborn diapers:

2 medium size wetbags (planetwise) for when I'm out
2 planetwise wetbag pail liners, which I use in a stainless steel step trashcan from Target
24 GroVia reusable wipes. I store a handfull in a reusable wipes container. I just dampen a few in the morning and add more as needed. I use a ziploc bag with pre moistened wipes for when I'm out.

Tide detergent
Angel Baby Bottom Balm for rashes

For the future, I have a diaper sprayer and some Bac-out.

I also have:
6 Bumgenius freetimes
18 size small diaper rite pre-folds
5 diaper rite one size covers

The covers are adjustable so she will be able to wear them until she is potty trained, but the pre-folds are sized, so I'll buy the next size when she needs them.

I also have 4 size small and 4 size large hemp inserts for night diapering.

We're loving cloth so far!

@Vegmama: It's so hard to know without your LO being here! Do you have a sense of the different types of diapers and what you're interested in using? Are you doing newborn or just one size?

I would recommend to someone to buy:
Enough for 20 newborn changes (washing about every 1.5 days, number depends on what type of diaper) OR newborn cloth rental

-10 Flip Covers
-20 Flat Diapers
-3 organic overnight flip cotton inserts (for when LO isn't changed overnight any longer)

-1 medium travel wet bag
-30 cloth wipes (cut up tshirts, washclothes, etc. all work)
-water spray bottle
-2 pail liners and an open trashcan

what @merriment is SO true. i know, i KNOW, how it feels to want to buy all the things ahead of time but I wish I hadn't!

We initially had something like 10 BG 1-size pocket diapers and 10 Fuzzibunz 1-size pocket diapers. Fuzzibunz worked well when DD was really little, but we ultimately switched to BumGenius (and we bought enough of those to increase our stash to ~25 diapers in total).

For newborn, we used a newborn cloth diaper rental b/c the 1-size diapers don't fit until they're a little bigger.

We also have
- 4 medium-sized wet bags (for daycare)
- 1 small wet bag (for short outings)
- 2 large wet bags (in place of a diaper pail in DD's room)
- Coconut oil (we use this as diaper cream)
- ~60 cloth wipes (we actually don't use these... we use disposable wipes instead)
- Rockin green hard rock detergent
- RLR for diaper stripping (1x per month)
- Bleach for diaper stripping (1/4 cup 1x per month)
- Bummis size large diaper liners (we put one of this inside each of DD's diapers to catch any poop that happens)
- Diaper sprayer (we were really gungho about our diaper sprayer initially, but now we switched to using diaper liners instead, so no spraying is needed)

I'm due in four weeks (OMG), and here's what I have so far:

36 GMD Newborn (Orange Edge) prefolds
24 GMD Small (Yellow Edge) prefolds
9 BumGenius Freetimes AIO
6 Thirsties Duo size 1 covers
4 Thirsties size XS covers
6 Thirsties cloth wipes (may use as washclothes if I don't do cloth wipes)
1 Safety 1st Diaper Pail

I will be purchasing off my registry:
1 BumGenius Freetime AIO
2 PlanetWise diaper pail liners
1 PlanetWise wet/dry bag (for daycare)
1 PlanetWise medium wet bag (for diaper bag)

Detergent: Country Save powder detergent

I have a small stockpile of Target Sensitive skin disposable wipes, but I'm open to trying something else if they don't work for her skin. I also need to purchase some cloth diaper safe diaper rash cream.

So take this with a grain of salt because DS is not here yet. I basically bought whatever I wanted because felt like convenience the first few weeks trumped everything. I also bought most of the covers from a HB-er and from a consignment store. I decided to go with a covers + insert/fitted system for the newborn period, which we will re-evaluate before buying more of the larger diapers.

My goals were to have a few teeny tiny newborn size covers to eliminate blow outs and to have 30-36 diapers that would fit the newborn stage.

Covers = 11
5 Thirsties Duo Size 1
2 Best Bottoms one size
1 Rumparooz NB
1 Bummis NB
1 Imse Vimse NB
3 Thirsties covers Size Small

Fitted Diapers = 22
12 GMD NB
3 Swaddlebees NB
3 Tots Bots Bamboozles Size 1
4 Thirsties Size 1

Inserts = 10
7 Thirsties Stay Dry Duo Size 1
2 Flip OS
1 SoftBums Super Pod

Pre-folds - 12 GMD Size Small - I bought these intending to use as burp/multi purpose cloths, but in a pinch can be trifolded or snappi'd.

Wet bags - 2 Planetwise pail liners (plus a tall plastic pail) for nursery, 1 small zippered wet bag (Rumparooz I think) for the diaper bag, 1 Medium zippered wetbag for living room changing station, 1 large zippered Planetwise wetbag for daycare.

Wipes: ~30-40. I bought a mix of brands, I think mostly Osocozy. I also have the Oxo wipes holder.

Detergent: Ecos F&C - I wanted one I could buy in store, instead of needing to order and this is available at WF.

Diaper Cream: Grandma El's

Once he outgrows the fitteds I'm hoping to switch to mostly inserts (flip/thirsties/softbums). But we'll see if the timing works out and if how the poop situation is then, since they don't contain it like fitteds do.

We have 32 Bumgenius 4.0 pockets
2 Kissaluv pail liners
We use a mix of Target wipes (so cheap but awesome) and cloth wipes (which get thrown in with the diapers)
1 diaper sprayer

I think 30ish diapers is more than enough, unless you use covers.

This sounds idiotic, but I wanted to remind you that. you can always buy more after the baby arrives!
Start with a few and buy more as you figure out what works best for your family.
I know it is so tempting to have your entire stash picked out, prewashed and put away pre-baby, but I would try to reign that impulse in if possible. ;)

@Vegmama: I think we have around 30 all together but 18 is ideal for us in between washings! We use regular tide or rock on green to wash them. We started cloth diapering at 3 months. Honestly NY lo would of needed a newborn stash (aio would of never fit him at birth regardless of what they say) and I don't want to invest in newborn stash that will be used for such a short amount of time!

We started cloth when his cord stump fell off. We rented newborn sized diapers from ModernCloth.com. We got:
-12 FuzziBunz pockets XS
-12 BumGenius AIO newborn size

I really loved the rental program and I really loved the FuzziBunz! But, we didn't want to spend too much and wanted to buy one-size diapers, so we ended up with
-20 BumGenius 4.0 pockets (with snaps)
-6 BumGenius 4.0 AIO (with velcro)

I would much much rather have all my diapers have snaps over velcro & I like the pockets more than the AIOs. Besides the diapers, we've got:

-1 kissaluvs pail liner (love it)
-1 planet wise large hanging wet bag (love it)
-1 planet wise medium wet bag (for diaper bag)
-a big plastic target trashcan
-a small target trashcan (for wipes: we were doing cloth, but husband preferred disposable)
-angel baby bottom balm (love the way this smells!)
-bac-out spray for odors
-Rockin' Green detergent
-a place outside to hang diapers in the sun, whenever we can (this is SO key - sun them every chance you get!)

We did have some hemp inserts, but after using disposables for a few months because of a plumbing issue we never went back to cloth at night.

We have:

18 BG AIO (Freetime) and 6 Elemental (I prefer the Freetimes).
6 Double Dry inserts (for nights, my son is a heavy wetter and a belly sleeper)
1 large planet-wise wet bag (hangs in our bathroom)
1 medium planet-wise wet bag (for the diaper bag)
Angel Baby Bottom Balm (or something like that, I can't remember exactly what it's called)
Charlie's Laundry Soap Powder

We mostly use regular wipes (Pampers Sensitive)

We did not CD until he was 2wks old, and had one blow-out at 3wks (loose fit around the thigh, I think). We had 18 diapers to start, and were okay with them for several weeks, although I was washing daily (DS is super sensitive to being wet, though), and then my MIL bought me another 6. After a month or two I was washing them every day and a half or so, and at 13 months I wash them every 2-3 days.

@citymouse, the hole isn't big enough to get the diapers in easily, especially the larger/wide nighttime diapers. I don't want to have to push and prod a pee soaked diaper into the diaper pail every morning. I can roll them up a little and shove them in while touching the back of the Freetimes, which is fine....but the nighttime diapers soak all the way through. Just kind of poorly designed, IMO.

We tried to be really minimal in terms of what we bought (I think we spent under $200 total, and we are still CD-ing at 18 months). We elected for Flips and covers because we knew we would be hanging the diapers to dry (we don't have a clothes dryer) and we were worried the AIOs would take too long to dry. We wash diapers every other day.

Covers:
2 Thirsties (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003AJXY60/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) (these come in various sizes, so we started with size 1 and then moved up to size 2)
2 Flip (http://thegreennursery.com/flip-diaper-covers-snaps-cover-only.html?gclid=COPKmYy5oLkCFYik4AodRykAYQ) (these are one size, they definitely fit her better now that her legs are a bit chunkier)

We started with the following to go inside of the covers:
12 prefold diapers (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000TZVW6M/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and 2 snappis
6 Flip inserts (http://www.amazon.com/Flip-Insert-Stay-Dry-3-Pack/dp/B006JX6T3Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1377703656&sr=8-2&keywords=flip+diaper+inserts)

When she grew out of the prefolds, instead of ordering more prefolds we just bought 6 additional Flip inserts. The Flip inserts were a bit faster than the prefolds, the poop situation was a little less ummm runny, by that point and I liked that they wicked a little bit so it kept her a bit drier. That last bit was important when we were out and about.
The Flip inserts (like the Flip covers) were one size. They have seams sewn into them so you can easily fold them when baby is small.

At some point around 14 months we had to get doublers because of the volume she was peeing. They are smaller than the Flip inserts and just sit on top of the Flip insert, but for some reason I can’t find a picture of them online.

At some point (probably when I started worrying about staining our diapers…which is insane…), we bought these, and they made dealing with the poop so much easier. You can just lift and dump it. There are several brands.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036QV93C/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

So in summary:

First six weeks of life: disposable
Six weeks to 6 months (ish): prefold, snappi and cover OR flip insert and cover
6 months (ish) to 14 months (ish): flip insert and cover
14 months (ish) to present: flip insert, flip doubler and cover

Whew! That was a novel.

@Vegmama: I genuinely adore my stash. I don't have as many as I listed here so I have to wash daily, but that's the only thing I would change about my stash - more of it! I tried several other diaper types but the ones listed above are the clear winners for me.
