@lindseykaye: I love this! I stumbled onto the Big Book of Less in a bookstore a few months ago and really loved it. It seems a potentially great gift.

@Mrs. Carrot: I know what you mean about books being so personal. I’ve had good success with journal-type or prompt books for some of my friends/SIL before. I am planning to buy SIL the below book this year, I think it’s right up her alley (and happens to be authored by a dear friend from HS). These may be even more niche but wanted to mention something other than novels as a book option.

@catgirl: Oh yes we LOVE the Wonderbly books. DD1 has the lost her name book, and last year we got her the “where are you...” book and activity book and she’s spent hours and hours looking at them. DD2 got “Bedtime for...” last year and loves it too. Thank you for the reminder! I will definitely check them out again to see what else may be available.

@Mrs. Carrot: for animals, Brambly Hedge (linked above) and Sophie Mouse series! We read Brambly Hedge out loud before she could read it so I can’t remember the level but it’s so special - the pictures of their intricate homes inside trees and such are so fun. It’s not a chapter book exactly but there are 8 adventures you can get in one volume or separately. Sophie Mouse is probably a pretty good fit level wise and there are a decent number in the series. We also have some combined volumes of those.

So I'm actually wondering about this for adults this year. I typically don't give books because reading is so personal to everyone and I'd hate to give something that someone doesn't like (especially as a big reader myself) but I really want to keep supporting indie book stores and lots of them are doing surprise book bundles (which worked out great for me personally!) so I'm considering that for some of my friends and family.

For my kiddo, we buy books in such massive quantities (books and LEGOs are our two "buy anything you want" categories for her) that I'm not sure what would seem gifty/special so I'm definitely interested in everyone's suggestions. She's a solid reader now (7 year old, does early chapter books on her own, but they have to be heavier on pictures) and loves animals. We got her a huge Animals! book from DK for her birthday that she reads nearly every day so I'd love suggestions for good animal encyclopedias and maybe good animal based chapter books (we just started reading the Nocturals series, which is great).

@catgirl: My daughter had great success with early chapter readers by Branch Books, specifically the Owl Diaries, Unicorn Diaries and Kung Pow Chicken. They're kind of a cross between graphic novels and books - light on text and heavy on graphics but longer than a picture book. I highly recommend them.

For kids who love The Book With No Pictures, try getting them My Book with No Pictures - it's the same book but with some of the words taken out and turned into a kind of Mad-Libs situation - my kids LOVE it.

We do a package of books for each kid every year - four or five books wrapped up together. So B, who's 6 and loves animals and learning about stuff, is getting:
The Animal Book: A Visual Encyclopedia of Life on Earth
Dragonology
Mysteries of the Universe (we have the Animals one in this series and it's been by far the most popular book he's had)
A Geronimo Stilton book that I picked because it has a white tiger on the front

W, who's 4, is getting:
The Grateful Book
The Bold Brave Bunny
an Elephant and Piggie book
One or two others that I'll pick up as they appeal.

Seconding the Wonderbly books, too - both kids have the Lost My Names books, and then we also have The Incredible Voyage Home and the Littlest Bear, which would be super cute for a younger sibling.

Love these book ideas! Another happy kid in my house who loves The Book with No Pictures, too

DD (will be 8 at xmas) was gifted the Never Girls book set by my brother a couple years ago and I found a companion holiday book and activity book I’ve already purchased and stashed away.
(This is a link to the full set if anyone wanted to see more about the series The Never Girls, 14-Book Collection https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083XP74X4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_WodKFbT8MDSMK )

We also picked up a newer Princess in Black book for her as well. Both of these series are books we’ve read with her (and re-read) so I’m happy to add to these collections.

I’ve got some Usborne books on the list - 1000 Animals and Look Inside Your Body. Plus a book How to Draw Everything that looks great (she draws constantly).

DD2 will have just turned 2 but she has ALL of her sisters books so I’m stumped on any books for her...

I have a few on each kid's list...
For DD, who LOVES the book 'Press Here', I have 'Don't Push the Button' by Bill Cotter, and 'Let's Play' and 'Mix it Up' by Herve Tullet.

For DS, I have some drawing books, 'Learn how to draw dinosaurs', 'How to draw 100 animals', and 'My first I can draw'.
We also love Jennifer Ward's books so I have some of those, 'There was an old martian who swallowed the moon', and 'There was a coyote who swallowed a flea'.
@catgirl: Encyclopedia Prehistorica Dinosaurs: The Definitive Pop-Up is also on his list.

I'm having trouble picking books for DD this year - she's at the stage of starting to read but still wants us to read picture books for her. So many books either seem to young or too old. But so far we have purchased these:
Encyclopedia Prehistorica Dinosaurs: The Definitive Pop-Up
My Encyclopedia of Very Important Things: For Little Learners Who Want to Know Everything
An Elephant and Piggie Set
A bunch of random early readers (I found them on facebook marketplace, $10 for 25 books)

Still on her wishlist:
Ish
They Day You Begin
The Invisible Web
The Magical Yet
More early readers

Family will purchase more, as well.

@HappyBaker: we did a dictionary gift one year and that thing is awesome! Came in handy this year too.

I’ll probably save it for her January bday but my 8yo will get HP Goblet of Fire - the illustrated version. Those are so worth the extra cost! I’m not sure what else to get her. Other than HP she’s not much of a re-reader so the library makes more sense. Maybe the Rebel Girls book!

Otherwise thinking some Usborne books for the younger two - I love all their non fiction/educational since we already have a million fiction picture books and phonics-y early readers.

I got a bunch of LEGO books to give as gifts on Prime Day. The LEGO ideas books and then a bunch that have ideas but also come with a few mini things to build (Amazing vehicles and Bedtime stories). For DD I bought an elementary dictionary (which is so silly but I know she will love ha), the new Kids Baking Cookbook by Duff, and one of the 100 Stories for Rebel Girls books because we listen to that podcast every day.

My mind is apparently on gift giving! This is a spinoff of the book thread and gift giving thread! Are you planning on gifting any books this year? Which ones?
