@Vegmama: our LO was formula fed and had no water until 6 months per pediatrician recommendation.
Formula is formulated to provide all the nutrition and hydration necessary.
Sears recommendation seems a little odd to me.

It's strange the book didn't specify after 6 months. Your LO is plenty hydrated from breastmilk & formula. In fact, giving even just a little water can make her feel full when she's not which isn't good if she has had weight gain issues.

That being said, I don't think it has hurt her. My mom said she gave us water (and gave LO some before I asked her not to) and we are all totally fine :)

@Vegmama: formula fed babies do not need water. The recipe for the bottle is formulated so they get enough hydration. They can actually get an electrolyte imbalance from water at that age.

My pediatrician said that all the water baby needs is in the breastmilk. When DS was around 6 months I started giving him like an ounce of water every other day. He is 9 months old now and eats more solids (I am still nursing him) but now I'll give him like 3-4 ounces a day. He likes water. I give it to him when he eats his solids

Yeah my Dr. said no water until 6 months and even then it was not necessary, but that we could start then, that was not specific to breastfeeding or formula feeding.

We did not give water to our LO until he turned 6 months old. We started supplementing at 4 months with formula and his doctor still recommended not offering water until at least 6 months.

R is 8 months and still doesn't get much, if any, water. She still gets 25-30oz of BM. We give her a sippy cup at meals but it acts more like a teether! I'd definitely check with your doctor.

@ShootingStar: That's what I thought too. It says in the book (and obviously, I'll talk to her pediatrician) that BF babies don't need extra water, but babies who drink formula can benefit from water.

I thought you absolutely weren't supposed to give young babies straight water? They should get enough hydration from breastmilk or formula.

We didn't start giving water until 6 months when we started solids. The doctor didn't recommend it but LO was breastfed, so I'm not sure if the rules are different.

Hi bees. Our 5 week old is currently about 2/3 bottle fed with breast milk, and 1/3 supplemented with formula (while I am actively working to increase my supply). In "The Baby Book" by Dr. Sears, he mentions that formula fed babies should have up to 4 oz of water each day.

Today, we gave her an ounce of water between feedings. She seemed okay with it. We aren't doing it as a replacement, just doing it to ensure she's hydrated.

Did any of you give water in the early days? If anything, the book says it can help with hydration, and regulating their poopy diapers.
