I knew from my time nannying what I liked, so we just went to BRU and found one that fit what I wanted. It was over $500 with the ottoman, though I'm not sure exactly. We looked other places, but had no luck.

Oohhh good question! I don't have any great advice to add because I just started shopping too - I'm definitely loving all of these suggestions though. The glider can be such an expensive purchase!

I got this rocker and ottoman set from wayfair and I love it. Not as expensive as all the other gliders I looked at. I didn't want a wooden one either. It's not too big and doesn't sit high off the ground. I'm 5'2" and my feet more than touch the floor.

I'm not sure there's anything DH hates more than furniture shopping, but I think you all have convinced me that maybe he should come with me to do the final deciding. Wish me luck with that! (although, he already likes our recliner, so even if he hated a glider, it's not like he'd be chairless...he might just have to move from room to room)

Sat in TONS of chairs!! Ended up deciding to get a better quality leather glider/recliner than we felt we were finding in baby stores, so opted for a local furniture store who were super helpful in getting us a style & color we could use elsewhere once we're done with it in the nursery. We probably paid $750, but it's so comfy & I've spent a lot of time in it so far! It is a "Best" brand, but can't remember the model. They have tons of different sizes & styles, materials & colors, and came in about 7-8wks, I think.

@MaryM: We could not justify the amount for the fancy upholstered glider/rockers so we got this one instead:
http://www.amazon.com/Stork-Craft-Glider-Ottoman-Espresso/dp/B001IACJQ4/ref=sr_1_1?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1441824841&sr=8-1&keywords=stork+craft+glider

It is padded but wooden based and was $130 or so. My parents got it for us in a different color. I primarily nursed in that chair for LO#1 and rocked her to sleep every night for two years. I am now using it to nurse LO#2 (and pump) and it has worked for us. It is starting to look old and stained but any chair that you sit in with a baby is going to get spit up and poop on it.

I did make a pillow for my back to match the nursery decor and that has been helpful, plus I sat on another pillow (from our couch) the first few weeks after delivery.

I don't think $500 is really that bad for a nice rocker. We spent close to $1,500 for ours from PB Kids. I would really make sure you and your husband are both comfortable though. You (hopefully) won't be the only one handling night time wake ups. We had to buy the PB Kids wingback rocker because my husband is 6'6" and it was the only one we found with a high enough back for him to be comfortable that was still attractive looking. I'm about a foot shorter and it's equally comfortable for me.

@MrsF: I think we're planning to keep the recliner in our bedroom and use it primarily when the baby is first born, but we'd get a glider to have in the nursery for later.

The recliner is comfy but not exactly attractive, so I haven't really wanted to put it in a common area! And we do use it sometimes when one or the other of us can't sleep (i have stomach issues and DH recently hurt his back).

So I think a second chair could be worth it. And I personally like to rock, so there's that!

We got a Best chair and ottoman from BBB. It was expensive but between 3 years and 2 babies we have gotten SO much use out of it. I would say that if you already have a very comfortable recliner you probably don't need the rocking feature. We have mostly used the chair for nursing / feeding / reading books. My kids never really rocked to sleep. If they needed motion if was more like walking or bouncing them around. Every baby is different though!

@MaryM: It is this one with the matching ottoman. Seriously nothing but great things to say about it. After 16 months of daily use/abuse it still looks new. It isn't flattened or worn looking at all. It has been squashed and climbed on and had milk and formula and throw-up on it. Everything wipes right off. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=67274726&cp=&parentPage=search

@snowjewelz: Is it bad that I haven't even considered DH's size? lol

I'm 5'3, he's 6'3. There's quite the difference. But I figure I'll be using it more often so it better be low for me.

I *think* it was this chair (it was a different pattern in the store, but was the only chair with patterned upholstery). http://www.buybuybaby.com/store/product/pulaski-glider-recliner-comfort-chair-in-doodles-ash/1043161096?categoryId=32627

We had a wooden rocking chair for DD and it was fine but definitely not comfortable. I didn't have a ton of extra $$ lying around after buying the stroller, car seat, crib, etc. so we made do. For this baby, we already have the big ticket items so we decided to splurge on a good glider. We ended up getting a Monte Grano glider/recliner. It is SO COMFORTABLE. I love it so much. And it has a modern design so I know we will use it well into the future in our living room even after our babies are grown.

Curious if it's the one my mom and I also loved!

I figure I guess I can register for it and maybe a whole family of folks would go in together for it (my dad's cousins often do that for weddings and babies) or use a completion discount and get it myself.

I constantly checked craigslist and local FB group with b/s/t childrens items!

Are you looking at the Best chairs? I'm just guessing based on the price point! That's what we got (we were ultimately gifted the chair), and while it really is big for a small person like me, DH on the other hand is big so we need it. It's super super comfortable!

I went and sat in ALL the chairs at every local baby store lol. I just picked the one I found to be the most comfy. It was at BRU. It was expensive (I think right around 500 + 100ish for a rocking ottoman). Honestly I probably would not have bought it if I was paying for it-- my parents wanted to get us a glider and were very insistent that "that's just how much these things cost" and reassured me they didn't think it was too much money at all. But I'm cheap so I probably would've found something cheaper. BUT.... I love it. It was by far the best thing we bought for our daughter's 1st year of life. I spent countless hours sitting in the chair with her. Nursing her, rocking her, holding her while she slept. Like seriously hundreds of hours in her first year of life. And I was 100% comfortable. Neither my ass nor elbows ever fell asleep! I think I would've been a lot less chill about the many (many many) hours spent holding my sleeping kiddo if I'd not had that chair.

How did you decide what you wanted and where did you get it (preferably affordably!)

I have a super comfy recliner, but of course it doesn't rock. I have a super comfy rocker, but it has wooden arms so I think I'd get tired sitting in it for long stretches.

I'm also super short in the legs, so I can't blindly order online because my feet don't always touch the floor so I want to try them out.

I found a chair I liked a lot from BBB, but it was more than $500 and that seems like a lot! Am I naive? Is that not that bad? (yes, I do realize someone could use a 20% off coupon to bring the prince down $100...)

Any suggestions of where else to go?
