@Foodnerd81: There are small gift sets that offer three 1 oz. tubes/containers (which would allow her to put them in her bag/carry on).

@Foodnerd81: I just ordered a small in the leather pouches from West Elm for one of my girlfriends. I think that it's SO cute and could be useful if she is out on the town.

@pwnstar: my favorite hand cream too! But it would have to be smaller than 3 oz if she's flying without checked bags.

I'm thinking the little leather pouch from west elm that @oskarsmommy: mentioned and a gift card to Starbucks. Even if she doesn't drink coffee she can get water or juice and a snack in the airport.

@Meowkers: I'm pretty sure you don't know what "freezing" is :silly: BIL is always freezing when he comes out here in the late summer, in pants and a hoodie while we are in shorts.

A small gift bag that has some chocolate, maybe some loose leaf tea or small bag of coffee. Trial sized bottles of flavoured olive oil, handmade soap from a craft fair or something? Small bottle of nice hand cream? haha, that's what we're doing for my dads gf and it's easy enough. Plus everything is light enough so if the gf is flying home, it won't weigh much.

L'Occitane hand cream is one of my favorite go-to gifts. Also, what about a *local* gift, like a Red Sox (or Pats) hat? I wouldn't do anything personal (like jewelry), and I (for one), don't drink coffee (or really anything at SBux other than maybe hot chocolate).

I'm in southern California and it's FREEZING here! So don't automatically discount cold weather accessories.

Nordstrom Rack has cute little gift sets of makeup bags with an "emergency" kit inside. They also had cute bags with an array of charges and travel accessories.

A nice quality scarf in a trendy print (tartan is big right now).

A little jewelry box or tray.

@oskarsmommy: oh I like those, and it's free shipping week! Maybe with a Starbucks gift card.

@gingerbebe: good point that Starbucks are in all the Airports.

This sounds terrible but I don't feel like going through the work of figuring out a place back home! I'm already feeling pretty stressed out in general so easy is good. But these are great ideas.

starbucks gift cards, maybe in one of their cute City/State themed mugs for where you live?

Last year, the plan was to gift my SIL a gift card for a trendy bar or restaurant that she and her boyfriend could go to.(we didn't buy boyfriend his own gift since we didn't see them over the holidays) -- they live abroad so we don't actually know any of the places they like. We ended up gifting Euros and a note about how our intention was for a fun night out together. Maybe you could do something like this for her/them, and use your BIL to get ideas for a bar/restaurant?

We do Starbucks gift cards (they're in all the airports) or I get some gift set from Costco. The Jenna Hipp nail or gloss sets have been hits in recent years. A Contigo coffee mug or water bottle is another go-to.

Or depending on your spending limit, maybe an assortment of giftcards? Something for coffee, something for a lunch type place, and the movies? Or, my SIL often gives me Trader Joes ones. I tend to use them on more fun stuff than plain old groceries.

How about a gift certificate so she doesn't have to carry much, and she can get what she'd like when she gets home.

When I first introduced DH to my family, that was pretty standard. Movie giftcards are sort of a go to gift for both of our families. You could wrap it up with a couple boxes of candy if you want something for her to "open"

What do you get for someone you don't know at all? We are hosting Christmas and bil is bringing his girlfriend from CA. I know nothing about her aside from the fact that she is dating bil, so probably close to early 30s, and lives in SoCal so it doesn't get too cold. I want to make sure she has something to open on Christmas.

What would be your go to? I can't do cold weather accessories, and she is bringing everything home on a plane, so I don't want to do anything she wouldn't be able to bring past security in case she's not checking a bag (so no booze or big lotions or anything).

Ideas? The best I've come up with is nice socks. Maybe a touristy sweatshirt from our city?
