I just made this for my BFF yesterday:

http://m.allrecipes.com/recipe/46922/baked-penne-with-italian-sausage/

Partnered it with some garlic bread, a Caesar salad kit and some brownies. I think she really appreciated it!

i make lactation cookies IF i know for sure the mom is planning on breastfeeding - don't want to put unnecessary pressure/guilt on a non-breastfeeding mom. But those who are appreciate them adn they're tasty!

@Astro Bee: I use this recipe very loosely: http://thrivinghomeblog.com/2011/03/pizza-pockets/ - you can change out what you put inside for variety (DH likes them with ham and cheese, or just cheese and served with a dipping sauce.) I've also made them with store bought pizza dough when I don't have time to make the dough, and that worked just as well. They're delicious!

I usually bring chicken pot pie and a salad with some muffins to freeze and a pack of straws for nursing. I had a baby a few weeks ago and got so much pasta! I was grateful for anything, but something different might be nice. I got a batch of homemade frozen burritos that were awesome for easy, one handed meals!

Yesssss to the breakfast. I'm picky so I really haven't eaten the dinners people brought but you can't lose with breakfast!

And first thing in the morning it's been crazy, so I don't really get to sit and eat - I grab crackers or a pop tart or something. Fruit (cut up FTW!), bagels, pastries, etc would be great!

I've also skipped the casseroles and have gone to breakfast items now. I always do big bowl of cut up fruit, a couple dozen muffins (extra to freeze), and some kind of snack/trail mix. I figured that's what I ate when I got the midnight munchies, so other mom's can appreciate it too!

I always do tacos! I cook chicken breasts in taco seasoning and salsa in the crockpot and send them with some tortillas. chips and salsa (sometimes I make my famous salsa :) other times it's a jar), lettuce, cheese, sour cream, etc. Depending on the person, I'll send a 6 pack of beer too.

Maybe a fruit tray and muffins? Cookies?

I vote for breakfast! Since it's been a few weeks, she might have gotten a lot of pasta from other folks (like you, I *always* make pasta for people since it's cheap, easy, and a crowd-pleaser). Maybe a casserole with eggs, hash browns, sausage, etc.? Or something she can crock pot?

I also did tri-tip once for a friend. Marinade with chopped garlic, Montreal steak seasoning, EVOO, and balsamic... roast for 10 mins at 450, then 15 mins covered in foil at 350, then the last 15 mins uncovered at 350, yum!

My go-to is fruit salad or pizza pockets (they're kind of like hot pockets, but you make them at home and freeze - you can pick what you want to go in them, usually cheese + a meat, then the new mom just has to pop them in the oven for 20/30 mins for an easy meal.)

@Smurfette: I would definitely ask then! Otherwise I think @Cole: has a great idea. I really could've gone for some fresh baked cookies during those days! Fresh fruit's always good (or a sandwich tray that you could just pick up! Lunch is super hard to eat some days, too!).

I always change it up....but she's probably gotten a lot of the basics. What about some chili mac? Cook up some elbow noodles, bring some chili over, and a bag of toppings (cheese, onion, whatever). It's kid friendly.

I feel like anything breakfast-y is good, too. Egg burritos or cinnamon rolls. Breakfast was always harder for me than dinner, personally.

I've got to take something to a friend in march...i haven't thought about what to bring yet. I also take into consideration if she's one of my healthier friends or not (i mean, i'm grateful for food either way, but all the heavy/rich food sits so hard in my stomach, personally), so maybe calzones for her!

I've had this whole list saved for awhile: http://nataliehodson.com/11-healthy-inexpensive-freezer-meals/ if you want to mix something up, freeze it, and hand her a couple bags of frozen things :)
