For us, it's not as much as religious as it is guidance through his/her life. For my son, we chose my sister and brother in law. They are amazing godparents even if we don't practice much.

For bebe 2 I am asking my best friend. She isn't very religious either.

This is interesting, because godparents (for me) don't have anything to do with custody. It's more about guiding them and offering advice. I would hope if my son doesn't want to talk to me about something, he would ask a godparent.

we won't have any godparents, but i think my in-laws will take my kids if something happens to us. i'd like my bro to be next in line.

My DH is non-practicing Catholic & I'm non-practicing Methodist, however we both consider ourselves religious/spiritual, we just have not been regularly attending church. We both agree that we will find a church that we both like once we start trying for a child. When it comes to Godparents it is important for me to choose someone who I know my child can look up to and go to for advice, I don't necessarily believe this person needs to be a regular church attender, but more someone who can guide them when needed & spiritual enough to give them the correct advice. I"m a Godmother to two little ones, & that's how their parents felt about me.

Our kids won't have any godparents-- I'm a godmother, and I'm not religious at all (but the baby's parents are). I think I was chosen because I would be a good role model/caretaker if needed.

I still am undecided, LO is almost a year old. I'm a non-practicing Catholic, DH is a non-practicing Protestant and we don't belong to any church (If you declare a religion where I live, you must pay taxes to that denominated church and i don't agree with that).
So, LO isn't baptized, but we did name godparents, more in the capacity to guide and help LO if needed. He has three, my brother, DH's sister and DH's best friend (who is a non practicing muslim).

It was/is important that the godparents are religious. We want someone that will pray for our children and help them grow in our religion, not just be there for them.

I don't have god parents but my husband does and they're Catholic. We are going to be raising our kids in a Christian household, but not necessarily in any denomination so I don't think we"ll be having a ceremony that recognizes godparents.

DH sister and BIL have a son and we really wanted to be the godparents but since we cannot say for sure that we will be raising our children Jewish they decided not to ask us. DH was definitely a little offended, but it wasn't that big of a deal as we respected their wishes.

We are religious, and we WILL be baptizing our kids, but our denomination doesn't officially recognize god-parents (Presbyterian). Some people have them, but they play no role in the ceremony, and it's mostly people who are non-attenders and just want to include their friends, or are only familiar with what they see in the media, which is God parents.
When babies are baptized, the whole congregation is asked to help raise the child in the faith, instead of God parents.

Because the hubs and I are religious, it is important that my LO's godparents are religious as well. We haven't chosen her godparents yet...I'm thinking of my brother, though.

For those of you that will be baptizing/have baptized your children, were your god parents religious?

My BF is not religious but I think she would make a fantastic god parent in the sense that she would always be there for the LO. I know she could deal with the ceremony (she put up with our wedding ceremony) but I'm just wondering how other people have done this?
