DH and I are discussing this now.

Our son will be baptized Catholic. So godparents have to be faithful Catholics (or they can be a "Christian Sponsor"...but the purpose isn't just ceremonial...it's to help support and encourage the child in their faith)

The obvious choice (I think) is my brother and his wife. We see them more than anyone, they're faithfully Catholic, and I know they'll fully celebrate all the sacraments.

But DH also wants to honor his sister (who is Christian). And I love her...but she's just not at the top of my list for "Godparent" (especially because I feel so strongly about my SIL being godmother).

I'd rather we let her know we see her as a role model and invite her to be super involved in our kids' life...which I know she will be anyway.

I am a godmother twice over. My godson is 15 i was young when he was born and haven’t been the best godmother to him. My goddaughter is almost 5 and her mom really taught me how to be a good godmother by talking (before her daughter was born) about what her godparents did for her and how special their relationship is. Anyway, for us godparents are religious, so we picked people who actively practice our faith and will help teach it to our son. That criteria kept us from choosing a beloved aunt and uncle who are practice a different faith than us, but who are named as guardians of our son in our will. No one will ever raise our son as we will, but they will love him and hopefully his godparents will help maintain his religious education if God forbid, both my husband and i die. Also i know many people use the term godparent to mean guardians, but please know only having a valid will for your state will enforce that preference. the attorney who drafted our will insisted we have a list of at least three people in order of our preference to be guardians for our children in the event of our deaths. Morbid but important to know!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I totally feel you on that not wanting to leave LO with anyone in case of death! I'm in the same boat.

@josina: That's my fear with picking a friend or even a family member. None of my godparents are in my life and DS godparents we see MAYBE once a year.

We chose family for our two, my sister and dad for DS, and my SIL and 2nd sister for DD. LO's are baptized catholic so their godparents need to be christian. No real expectations for them, but in my family godparents give xmas/birthday gifts. I did want to choose people that will be in their lives 'forever'. One of my stepdaughter's godparents was a friend of DH, and she never sees him/doesn't know him (at 14).

For us the Godparents are totally honorary. We chose two of our favorite people- BIL and my BFF. We need to select actual guardians in case someone else needs to raise LO. There really isn’t anyone I’d want to leave LO with though.

My son isn't baptized, but we chose people to be is special adults. They include family and friends and it's basically non religious. The idea was to have people that he could talk to as he gets older if he can't or doesn't want to talk to us.

We do godparents for religious purposes. Haven’t yet had my girl baptized in the Catholic Church, but we will pick two people who are actively religious. That takes out the more “obvious” choices. For legal guardianship should my husband and I️ die, we also have sort of not obvious choices so I️ have a will drawn up and a copy of it with two unbiased very trusted people who will ensure it’s carried out. Tough decisions all around!

If you chose to pick godparents for your child(ren) how did you go about it and what were your expectations for these godparents?

DS godparents are DH’s cousins and honestly have not been the best choice. I have someone in mind for DD but was just curious about everyone else’s process.
