@Littlebit: Going off the pill has been good / bad. I've been off for 6 months, and my mood swings, and attitude have been so much better! It's been a bit hard, though, as I've suffered from crazy bad breakouts on my whole body, and I still haven't regulated. I just started cycle #7 off the pill, and still don't have a clear picture of when I O, when AF will come, etc...

It sounds like birth control would be a good option for what you're looking to do. How did your body react to going off BC this past time?

Personally, I will never go back on it...I was on it for 11 years. We're TTC at the moment but we'll use the pull and pray, condoms, or vasectomy before I go back on the pill.

I will never go on the pill again ever. In the future I will probably use charting and/or pulling out method. I know those are not fool proof pregnancy avoiders, but after all my trouble conceiving, if I had a surprise pregnancy earlier than I thought, I would take that as a blessing.

Since you are waiting something like 3 more years before TTC though and getting off the pill the first time wasn't so bad for you, Perhaps going back on isn't a terrible idea.

I personally will never go on birth control

@blackbird: Thanks for the encouragement! It definitely isn't fun at all, but we want to provide a loving, caring environment full of time for our little one when we finally get there!

I also go on and off bc really easily. I don't trust non-hormonal methods at all! I'd be so paranoid of an oops...sorry you're in the position to delay ttc, but I wanted to commend you for being responsible about shelving it, since I assume there are some good reasons (instead of the "it'll all work out" default). I know it's a tough road, and I hope you are both better off for it!

I luckily escaped 6 years of BCP use without any side effects to my cycle...but reading some other bees bad experiences with it I will not go back on it after I give birth. DH is not too fond of the idea but I'm leaving my hormones alone.
I have a pretty normal natural cycle so I didn't get any benefits from the pill (besides no unplanned pregnancies). It did make my sex drive go waaaaay downhill.

We will probably do natural family planning or I may consider the copper IUD.

@Mrs.Ham: I just wanted to offer an alternate take: I was on bcp for several years, went off, got my cycle back immediately and got a BFP after 3 months of trying . We could not have afforded and oops baby after lo#1 so I went on the mini pill at 6 wks postpartum and then back on the regular pill after I day weaned. When we decided to ttc again, I went off the pill in July, got my normal cycle back, and just got my BFP after our first cycle actually trying.

So my advice would depend a lot on how you reacted to going off the pill the first time. If it was easy once, it is likely to be so again, but if you are having complications, charting and withdrawal it condoms may be better.

Good luck--it sounds like you are in a tough place right now.

I think it depends on how quickly your body recovers from being on the hormones, I know women who are still waiting for their period to come back after 6 months of going off BCP. I was lucky and got a period right away but I still won't go back on it (the nuvaring or pills) again. I love charting and knowing my cycle. Plus, it's really effective in preventing if you do it correctly. Good luck making a decision!

I'm going to go against the grain and say go back on the pill.

I went off BCP March 2012 (NTNP). Come June, we had a bunch of extenuating circumstances come into play, and we decided to put TTC on hold indefinitely. For me, I didn't want to take any risk of getting pregnant during that hiatus, so I went back ON the pill in July 2012. Buuuuuuuut we decided to try again come November. So, once again, I stopped the pill.

The only weird side affect I encountered was spotting literally the entire month I went back on the pill in July. Other than that I was fine - nothing too out of the ordinary.

Oh, and I'm laughing at myself now because I was so convinced that if I didn't go back on the pill in July we'd have some oops baby. (I'm 10 months into TTC, so, yeah, guess that BCP didn't really matter anyways!)

Good luck whatever you decide!

PS - I can't wait to go back on the pill. Not digging the side effects off of it. The positives way outweigh the negatives, IMO.

I would never go back on BC ... especially after trying for so long to chart/get regular cycles. We used the pull-out method for about 5 years (with no other BC), and it worked for us. I charted to know my cycle ... The 'withdraw' method has a better rate than condoms when used properly.

@Mrs.Ham: I think I would handle 1 year and 3 years very differently. I could use condoms for a year. Not sure about 3 years though. Maybe you can narrow down a better timeline to help you two out?

@Mrs.Ham: I agree with PP about birth control, it was such a had transition for me, that we have been using condoms since our LO's birth (a year ago) and will continue to do so until we are ready to TTC again. I know it sucks, but when you are ready to TTC I have a feeling you will want to do be ready to go right away since you aren't wanting to take a break, and adjusting your body to withdrawl from BC will take a lot longer.

@LindsayInNY: Well, I still have to talk to DH about it, but we may not be able to TTC for 1 - 3 more years...that seems like a long time to use condoms to me. I'm just trying to figure out my own thoughts - I am desperately ready for a little one, so the fact that we are going to discuss delaying it is really a struggle.

@MrsBrewer: Like you said... DH is more open to 2 LOs instead of one and done now. I will not be going back on BC in between. I don't know if we'll chart or what. Once all LOs have been had, then I'll either do BC, IUD or something similar or maybe have DH fixed?

I agree with @LindsayInNY:

DH and I are not NTNP or TTC, and I went off the pill in in July. My period has yet to come back! Personally I don't think I will ever go back on the pill, and risk these long cycles especially since I will be TTC in the near future.

When you say "a while," how long are you thinking? Personally, going off BC was such a nightmare that I wouldn't go back on it. I would probably chart or use condoms or something in the meantime. Especially if the place was to TTC sometime soon.

Hubby and I have been NTNP for the past couple of months, and were going to give it a few more months before actively trying. Well...after a conversation about our future last night, I may be going back on the pill for a while. I really don't want to do this, but also feel like our future stability and goals need to come before having a baby. Did any of you have to give up on TTC? Were you an emotional mess like me?
