How old is he? Little M wouldn't take more than a short catnap from 4-5.5m. Then at 8m he dropped to one nap a day. I used to nurse him to sleep, but that stopped working a while ago.

We had the same problem as you until I asked daycare what her trick is - yes I wanted 14m to finally think to ask - she washes his face and hands with a really warm wash cloth, takes his shoes off and puts him in a sleep sack and reads him one book and he goes down like "woosh."

Now there's no "woosh" over here, but the warm cloth works really well and closing the blinds is new for us, but seems to help. I also use white noise just like night. Just having a routine and one so similar to bedtime where the cloth is like his bath, has worked wonders for us over the past couple weeks. Plus, I've been putting him down at the same time every day (12:30). The change has been really remarkable.

ETA: I wouldn't worry about using the blackouts - they know things are different at home and daycare, if it helps you, do it!

I try not to do blackouts during day because at daycare they don't do light out since all babies nap at different times in the crib room. White noise at night for sure though!

@caffeinated: Blackout curtains and white noise totally changed our naps!

That being said, we still have this issue often at 9.5 months. She's just not a good napper. She's good at other things though! :)

My LO is getting pretty good at putting herself to sleep, but I have been singing to her if she gets too fussy when I put her down. That plus pacifier and white noise seem to do the trick (and occasionally I rub her belly for like 30 seconds). I sing rock-a-bye and goodnight with some made up words and terribly off key humming half of it. She has had two 2 1/2 hour naps this week and a bunch of 40 min - 1 hour ones where she fell asleep in her crib.

@matador84: Some babies just aren't nappers, according to my pediatrician. But apparently just allowing them "quiet time" in the crib is okay so leave him in there for a while!

I did CIO accidentally for naps, and it helped. The other thing that worked was white noise and blackout blinds. Have you tried any of those?

we had this same problem! our LO went down peacefully at night time but would only take naps either being held or snuggled with us in bed. we finally had to get tough. :(

we started a consistent nap routine: sound machine on, pacifier in, read a book and rock for just a minute or two. when he's super drowsy and his eyes are rolling back i lay him in his crib and walk out. the first few days he would cry for up to an hour (at which point i would get him and try again in an hour or so.)

eventually he learned to go to sleep on his own and rarely cries when we lay him down for nap. i will say, though, that his naps were very short, 20-30 minutes at a time. but they have been getting longer and longer the more we stick to this routine (we're 2 weeks in)

nap sleep training is A LOT harder than bedtime and i've heard it can take 4-6 weeks to work.

good luck to everyone!

@matador84: I remember reading someone said they somehow nursed while hovering above crib... Ha! I'm only 5"2 and can barely get him in the crib now that he's longer and bigger so I can't imagine.

Ok...I'm a sucker. I went and got him with 12 minutes to go. He was screaming soooo loud! His bottom tooth is coming in and it was like a pain scream! Plus he spit up all on himself and it was grody. Now he's happily playing in his exersaucer like none of that ever happened.

Maybe some babies just aren't nappers?

@wheres_c i remember those days!! it was well worth it to hold them and starve over put them down and wake them up IMO!

Subscribing because we have the same problem. I wish daytime could be as easy as bedtime! The worst part is that it's obvious he's still tired and if I don't make him get some sleep he's a grump all day long! I do a naptime routine and I'm just doing it every day hoping that he'll get it eventually. If we still have this problem when he's 5.5 months old (next month) we'll probably use some version of CIO.

@scg00387 i nursed him 9-930, put him down at 930, woke right up, played so i left him alone--he has been babbling and rolling around for about 30 minutes and now just started crying! i'm like GOOOO TO SLEEP! I'm leaving him in baby jail for at least another 30 minutes.

Subscribing! Nighttime has been easier for us but naps take ten mins of rocking at least and then whe usually wakes after 15-30 minutes. He happily rolls around for up to 20 minutes and then squawks. I feel your pain!

@twoofeverything i think i had the same problem when DS was that age and consistency will be key. i think what you are doing helped us most in sleeping at night...put down, cry, let cry, soothe, but don't pick up, repeat cycle and he would usually be asleep. now he's just not that big a napper and i'm like UGH, did I do this to myself?

Honestly we have the same problem. I've started a really strong nap routine: we go into the nursery, put LO into his sleep sack, read a short story, then rock for 1-2 minutes until he's drowsy. I then put him into the crib and he wakes up within 5 minutes. SO frustrating. At this point, I just let him fuss/talk to himself and only go into to rock/soothe if he's all-out crying. I do this for an hour then get him up.
I'll tell you...some days are impossible. Yesterday, for example, he slept for a total of maybe 40 minutes in 3 little spurts. He's only 3 months old! AAAAAARGH! I'm just trying to stick with it and be consistent, even though it's hard. He will catch on eventually. At least...I hope...

The only time DS goes down and stays down is when I am putting him down for the night. If it is naptime, he will sleep forever in my arms, but the second I try and put him in his crib 90% of the time he will cry or wake right up. I just nursed him and then put him in his crib and he woke up...GRRRR! Now I'm watching him talk to himself on the monitor. I doubt he'll go back to sleep, but he needs to stay there for a while longer!

Any tips on how to get him to sleep especially for naps without waking up? Nighttime sleep is pretty easy.
