I had this problem a few weeks ago. Luckily, we were at a place where you had to go to the bar to get a drink. I went up alone and chatted with the bartender - we had an understanding. We all went out for dinner later and I didn't order a drink, and they noticed, but no one asked if I was pregnant. I like to think they just have excellent manners and know that if I am pregnant, I'll let them know when it's the right time. I really didn't want to lie to them.

Thanks everyone. Looks like the majority are saying go early and order a virgin drink. I think I'll give it a try. It might be easier than lying outright. I'm a terrible liar. And not going at all would bum me out.

I would normally say you should lie and say you are on new medication where you can't drink but in this circumstance, I would go early and sip on a virgin drink. Maybe ask for a Shirley temple (sprite with cherry juice and some cherries)

I think going early and talking to the bartender/your waitress is a great idea.

I would order a glass of wine and pretend-sip it all night, which is what I had to do when I was 6 weeks preggo.

I plan to use Artbee's excuse-- migraines. I legitimately do get migraines, and they have gotten worse (well, since going off the pill, which is another giveaway :). So when the time comes, I'm thinking I will say my doctor things migraines are a trigger so I can't drink for a few weeks or something. Lucky, or unlucky, for me, I'm always having some health issue so this is believable.

The problem with option #2 is that if someone offers you a drink or just buys one for you (even if you already have one) what are you gonna do? If they're the types that are like "Come on! I'm gonna buy you another drink!" then option #1 would give it away. If you can think you can get away with nursing one drink all night long, I'd vote for #2.

I agree with all the PPs - order sprite & cranberry (or seltzer & cranberry) in private and play it off like it's a cranberry vodka.

I'm a wino, and I used dark grape juice for wine (the dinner was at my house though, so I could swing this) and I also did the waiter thing and they brought me "fake cosmos" all night. My friends knew something was up since I usually stick with wine, but they didn't really say anything until I told them in week 10.

I would go the non-alcoholic option if you can. If they see you sipping on something that looks normal for you they won't suspect a thing. Otherwise, you might tip them off.

I've done the in cahoots with your waiter thing, works like a charm. Go for vodka soda, or gin and tonic, rum and coke minus the vodka, gin or rum.

Go early and if someone grills you for it, say you're trying to watch your girlish figure. Or, as Arden said, go early and talk to the waitress.

I think the others have a good idea to let the waitress know. I get migraines and can't drink anyway so it was easy for me. You could also say you've been getting lots of headaches lately and you think alcohol is a trigger for them so you don't want to drink, which is why you pushed for brunch.

I second what @Jesslc: said. I would get there early and let your waitress in on it. Tell her that you're going to order a drink, like a vodka cranberry, but you want her to just bring you cranberry juice. Or something like that. That way if the group orders a couple rounds, she'll still have your back and you're not constantly sneaking off to change your order.

I choose other. I will have the same problem in a couple of weeks and plan on being in cahoots with the waitstaff. We are going to a place that I frequent and I know the waitstaff will keep the secret.

i'd definitely go early, get a non-alcoholic drink and sip all night. if they know you well, they'll know something is up if you use the medication line which is so often used. another idea: one of my friends ordered a drink from the waitress, got up to go to the bathroom, told the waitress in private to bring her something non-alcoholic, then came back.

i would just say i hadn't been feeling well and am taking a cough syrup...and you don't want to mess up your liver! if you drink sprite all night, it might not draw that much attention to it.

I have a group of friends who I get together with as a group about four times per year. They are really old friends. I tried to get us to schedule a brunch instead of drinks, but no go, they insisted on drinks. So it's set for tomorrow night. There is no way I can show up and not order alcohol with this group and not be grilled about why and have guesses about me being pregnant. I'm not ready to tell. What would you do? So far I've come up with three options (below in the poll). Any other ideas?

Thanks!
