@yoursilverlining: Thanks for the advice! I'm going to call our hotel and see if they offer transportation to/from the airport and if I'll need a car seat. Another option might just be to take a ride BACK to the airport to catch a bus to the port. More research is needed!

@FaithFertility: Royal Caribbean!

@Adira: we've used the private car service Go Airport shuttle (private car arm of that company) and MJS transport in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale for airport/cruise transport if a private car or semi-private shuttle ends up being something for look for.

I couldn't find many hotels in Miami that offer both free airport AND cruise port shuttles because the airport and cruise port are across the city from each other. Just an FYI.

@caterw: I'll have to look into Uber Family. Thanks!

I like to bring a new reusable sticker book, markers and paper. That along with everything to see keeps him busy.

You can get Uber Family, where the drivers have a car seat installed or they will have a special folding one that can put up for you. We used it all over NYC and it worked out great! I definitely would not want to hold my squirmy 2 year old in a car!

Can you call the cruise line and ask if in your room, there is a storage compartment under the bed (as in the bed lifts up on hinges on one side, and you have a full storage space underneath)?

I would probably at least bring an umbrella stroller, even if the kids walk, you can use it for your stuff.

You've gotten great advice already but I just wanted to chime in that we did a cruise a couple years ago and specifically brought the carseat to bring on the shuttle to the port and they wouldn't even let us install it! We had to store it under the bus with the luggage, and then it just sat in our closet for the whole cruise. So definitely look into whether you could even use them or not if you decide to bring them. (This was a Disney cruise so it was their bus service from the airport to the port).

@Anagram: A car service is a good idea. I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the tip! And YES to screen time. Both my kids love watching videos, so we'll be bringing our two tables and loading them up with videos for the flight.

@Cole: Thanks. I might have to research the ports a bit more. I'm not sure what's within walking distance of the port, so maybe we'll want to be able to take a taxi somewhere too. I'll have to look into it more I guess!

I believe once we stayed at a hotel with an airport shuttle and took the shuttle back to the airport and then took the shuttle the cruise line provided since it was a big bus.

The other time we sucked it up and brought a car seat (we only have one kiddo), maybe you could do one seat and a bubble bum booster? We decided we wanted the flexibility of Uber and we wanted to take a taxi at one of our ports of call and there was no way I was talking that risk without a car seat.

@Adira: oh, and the flight will be fine with your age kids. If they like screen time, it's easy-peasy. Mine are 15 months and 3, and the last time I flew solo with the girls, our 3 year old was an Ipad zombie for the whole flight. Can't wait till the younger one cares about screen time for those special long flight/car trip scenarios.

@Adira: I think if you google, you should be able to find a car service with car seats, if you want that option. Most big cities have them--maybe a Miami area bee can chime in. There's also the Ride Safer vest for your 4 year old, if you get a regular taxi.

@Adira: I'm pretty sure any type of public transportation doesn't require car seats. So even riding in a taxi, which is really just a car, you aren't required to use car seats. I'm not sure how that works with uber though. Seems kind of crazy unsafe to me, but technically it's legal.

Oh, also - we went on a cruise out of Miami last year and flew into Ft. lauderdale because it happened to be a lot cheaper, even after adding in ground transportation. We took a semi-private shuttle (no car seat) one way and hired a private car that had a car seat the other way. There are tons of options for transportation in south Florida and they were all very reasonable. We stayed at the Comfort Suites North Miami which was fine and had a free cruise port shuttle.

I have no idea what the rules are in the states but here in Australia you are legally allowed to ride in any communal vehicle with kids on laps. We've taken my son (2 and a half) on a heap of shuttle busses and and he either sits on one of our laps or on his own in a seat. I guess I see it like public transit - i'm not going to bring a car seat on a bus or train right?

As for the cruise, my main piece of advice is wash your hands and your kids hands obsessively. OBSESSIVELY. They have hand sanitiser stations everywhere but in my experience that doesn't cut it.

What @T.H.O.U. Said: shuttle busses between airport and hotel and hotel and cruise port.

Cruise cabins are pretty small so pack light on the equipment (stroller, etc.) also, per the FDA (some other governing body?) only potty trained kids can go in the pools. Wearing swim diapers won't cut it - just as an FYI for your younger one.
