We also went out a lot at 8 weeks because he would sleep well in the car seat, stroller, etc. Around 3 months, I started to make sure that he took at least two naps in his crib each day and then another nap could have been in the car or while we were out. Now at 9 months, our whole schedule is based around his two naps and they need to be in his crib or else he's a crankypants at night. We try to get out of the house inbetween naps for an hour or go out after his afternoon nap.

At 8 weeks, my LO slept great in the ktan so if we were out for awhile, it was easy to get her to sleep. She did NOT nap in the car seat or stroller though. Now, at 4 months, she is wayyyyy to distracted by everything going on so she really only naps well in her crib in her room where it's dark + white noise

Oh gosh, looking back on it I would just go about my normal day and not worry about "routine" because 8 week olds an still sleep places and you can tote them around in carseat easier etc. my 1 year old will not sleep anywhere but home and won't transfer out of carseat. Go while you can!!

At 8 weeks it is tough to fit your life around naps.you would never get out. I would go with the flow until she turns 3-4 months and then focus on scheduling at that point.

I plan around feeding, but lo falls asleep whenever we are moving...so in car or in stroller. It makes it much easier!

But he doesn't eat as well when out and eating is so important for us, so that is stressful.

I didn't really plan my life around her naps until she firmed up on one midmorning nap at 10. About 7 months. Now we protect that nap pretty fiercely, but only because at 18 months I need some down time during the day. It's purely for my sake. She'd sleep in the car otherwise and be fine.

We didn't really plan life around naps until she dropped to 2. I didn't want to spend all of my time stuck at home. And, truly, schedules are more for you. Babies do well on them, but babies are also adaptable. I nursed her everywhere, so I wasn't ever concerned about that.

I am a nap time freak so even at 20 months, my life still revolves around her sleep schedule. She never slept in her car seat (until recently) so I never had that luxury as a newborn. Baby 2 gets here in 5 weeks so I am sure I stuck at home for a long time! I will be back to the three hour cycle.

EVERYTHING we do is planned around LO's sleep schedule. Her feeding time is flexible but when it comes to sleep, I am rigid!

LO would sleep in her carrier and sometimes better than if we were at home so especially at first I didn't pay much attention to nap time. If she had been more picky about where she slept I would have been more reluctant because grouchy babies are no fun.

lo is 6 months and i still try to go with the flow. when she was a newborn she was easy to take out because she would sleep anywhere. Nowadays if i have to make an appointment the i try to do it around her naptimes, otherwise if i need to go out then i generally do since she usually falls asleep in the car.

Naps and feeding trumps all. Don't mess with it, and don't feel too bad about it. If baby ain't happy, mama ain't happy. If baby doesn't sleep, mama doesn't sleep. And if mama is cranky and tired, well, no one is going to be happy.

@stlginkgo: i can't even think about 2 schedules! i'm sure you're doing a great job, and that your LO's will adjust. thanks for your response, i feel a little better. i cried over the weekend after we took him out and he napped for maybe 20 minutes, and he had this zoned out overtired look afterwards that made me feel horrible, not to mention he was cranky (okay, i admit, it doesn't take much to make me emotional these days!).

Wen my first was little I planned EVERYTHING around nap. A baby who naps well is a more pleasant baby to be around! I felt pretty pathetic for awhile but in the long run it was totally worth it!

Now that my second is here, I worry about trying to keep both schedules. Ultimately, I have a feeling it will be nearly impossible!

LO is 8 weeks old and I'm feeling a bit lame for not getting out more. I take a walk every day, but it's planned around his awake and nap time, and I'm not out for more than an hour. On the weekends, we do go out for a couple of hours, but I'm anxious the whole time about whether/how we're messing with his schedule and that he won't get enough sleep. On one hand I read things that say stick to his "schedule" (whatever that is) no matter what, whereas others emphasize getting out more.

What is/was your approach for taking LO out? Do you plan it around nap/feeding schedules or do you just get out there and adjust as necessary? When did you become comfortable with outings and having LO adapt to schedule disruptions?

I should point out that LO does not nap well, if at all, in the carseat so I can't count on him taking a nap when we go out. The carrier is a little better, but not great.
