Thanks, you guys! I had my appointment and was able to figure some stuff out and things were pointed out to me that I had sort of known on my own but kind of ignored. Thanks for your support, you're all so great!

As a mental health therapist I'm a strong advocate for seeking someone to talk to. Sometimes it makes a world of difference to have an unbiased individual to spill your guts out to. Whether you have the easiest baby in the world or a fussy baby we all have problems and it feels great to tell someone about it. You are far from alone!

I had PPD bad, so you aren't alone! And my baby was a SUPER easy baby that never fussed! I can't imagine what I would have been like if he wasn't! I suffer from depression as it is anyways, and then the hormone shifts after giving birth was horrible. I would start crying for no reason. My son's dad and I where breaking up too, and he actually made us move out when DS was 6 days old, so that didn't help :) I started back on my anti-depressants right away, and that did help. I also saw a counselor a few months after DS was born, and it was really nice to talk to someone of a neutral party that didn't judge you. Just be completely honest with them and tell them how you feel, and know that you are definitely not the only one!

eta: good for you for getting help. that's so great for you and your LO.

Don't listen to all the other moms with perfect babies...it will make you crazy. I made the mistake of listening to how everyone's babies were excellent sleepers. I thought I had the one baby on the planet that gave me a tough time when it came to sleeping. Turns out not to be the case most of the time, moms tend to sugar coat some stuff.

^ agree!

I do wonder though... if your ob thinks that some counseling would be good then maybe a psychologist would be better. For the most part psychiatrist really only prescribe meds & don't usually have a lot of "counseling" involved.

I think it's just a matter of having someone that can sympathize and help you work through your thought processes of being a mom and how to deal with this situation you weren't expecting (the extra fussiness)

Goodluck though.... just remember this is only a season and it will pass =)

The first couple months, I loved my LO but I didn't exactly love being a mom. Think of it, who would love being exhausted all the time, being a slave to a baby that is totally dependent on you, having no time to yourself, and stressing over breastfeeding, baby's sleep, and general care. The only thing that made it worthwhile was how enamored I was with my LO.

I think we all go through periods where we feel down or overwhelmed, I sure did. After LO was born, I was caught off guard by how all-consuming being a mom was (it was heaven anytime I had 5 minutes to myself). Try to find a way to get some "me-time" away from your LO to clear your head. Heck, I'd go to counseling every day just to get an hour of baby-free time.

I may be wrong but my guess is that you're a bit of a perfectionist and it's tough for you to accept how not perfect being a mom is. Cut yourself some slack, trust your instincts, and eventually, you'll develop a system that works for you.

I had a major breakdown today because of my lo's fussy :( she wouldn't nap and I'm exhausted! My hubby who stayed home from work sick (not contagious ) ended up taking her. I felt awful. It's hard to be a mom, and very hard when you're with the baby 24/7 with no break. Add fussy baby to the mix and of course you're bound to go a little crazy!

Counseling sounds like an awesome idea, hopefully they can help you figure out some coping skills.... or some ways to fit some me time in your life. Good luck!

Good luck with your counseling, sometimes it helps to speak with someone that is neutral and objective. I don't have experience with post-partum as I haven't had a child yet, but I just wanted to wish you luck.

One of my best friends went through some counseling and her LO didn't seem fussy at all so it really doesn't matter what type of baby you have. I don't think those two things are related. The counseling really helped her so I wish the best for you. Very glad that you are speaking to someone!

Some of you might have noticed that I talk a lot about how my LO is very fussy. At my 6week post-partum appointment with my OBGYN, my OB thought that I was not coping as well as I should be but did not think I had post-partum depression. She thought I needed to speak to someone, though.

Tomorrow is my scheduled appointment with a psychiatrist for "post partum counselling."

I already feel down in the dumps because it seems as though every new mommy I know has a "good" baby and is having a blast. But for me, I thought that despite LO's fussiness, I would still loooooooooooove being a mom.

Anyone else share a similar experience?
