We have a lab mix that sheds like crazy (I totally know what you mean about the hair tumbleweeds across the floor!).

Honestly, nothing that we try (brushing with FURminator's, baths, etc.) helps at all with the shedding itself. We are constantly covered in blonde dog hairs. But we have had a rumba for over two years now and it is a lifesaver. We have it set to run every night after we go to bed and we empty it every morning. It does a great job of keeping the dog hair around the house in check!

@LCTBQE: iRobot Roomba 780 pet and allergy series. I bought it in a flash Amazon sale. I had been eyeing the pet series one at Costco (also roomba brand) which I think is pretty similar - plus their return policies are amazing. If it hadn't been for the flash sale we would have gone with Costco.

@pinkcupcake: so the debris box will overflow if we get behind. It's definitely a maintence vacuum and not one you use to do a big clean. So if we miss a few nights we usually have to get the big vacuums out and start over. But if we set it every night (and you can program it, DH is just against it...long story) it can keep up pretty well. Granted all of our animals are ahort haired but there's 4! We got a pet series that was supposed to deal with pet fur more easily.

I don't have a solution. Just commiserating. I love our golden boy but wow the hair. Could knit a sweater with his weekly hair. We probably only bathe him every 4-6 weeks. We get him a sanitary cut and that helps with matting and shedding a bit. It's bum, feet, behind the ears, and his chest.

@MenagerieMama: lol I'm just picturing the dogs trying to herd it ;) do you find that the volume it holds is sufficient? Mine sheds so much, I'm worried the roomba will explode or short circuit.

@LCTBQE: furminator has been ordered! I'm really really hoping it'll help. Fx!

@pinkcupcake: Roomba!! Seriously. We have 2 dogs and 2 cats and they all shed like crazy. Our roomba isn't perfect but we run it every night and it keeps the tumbleweeds at bay. It fits under our couches which really helps I think. We procrastinated buying it for years and I regret that! It was painful to buy but soooo worth it!

ETA: we run it at night cuz the dogs would herd it so we wait until they're upstairs in bed with us and then run it downstairs (where they are all day) so they aren't bothered by it. And the cats don't care.

@pinkcupcake: hmm… I don't know if that's the solution, then, b/c the compartments on the robots are teensy. I've also heard that they break all the time even though they cost 500 freaking dollars. maybe a combo pack of spending insane amounts of money at the groomer, pawning off half the vacuuming onto your husband, and getting into the habit of Furminating while watching tv?

@pinkcupcake: I get it! just yesterday my husband had vacummed the entire house only to sit down on the couch with me and notice a giant tumbleweed had stuck to his foot. We feel your pain!

We want a roomba too. Aside from how expensive they are, I think it would give my Golden a heart attack! He is such an anxious guy.

@LCTBQE: you know, the robo vacuum was on my Xmas list but it wasn't fulfilled - maybe it's time to start hunting to the husband ;) I wonder if it would just choke and die at the volume of fur ... Seriously, I fill up TWO vacuum canisters a day. DAILY.

@T.H.O.U.: I just had a loooong convo with our groomer - it sounds like cutting her hair too short could upset the natural balance of the double coat so it's best to trim a max of 1.5". He also said it won't really stop the shedding - so we will just have shorter fur flying around :( I'm not sure what to do...

@KayKay: i swear, I need a "golden retriever support group" ;) she is seriously the sweetest, kindest dog. I get so mad at myself when I get annoyed with her because has the best intentions - it's not her fault a small dog leaps off her fur everyday. But ahhhhh there are days like today, when I've spent an hour vacuuming and then another golden tumbleweed floats by, that I'm seriously ready to lose it and about to take a razor to her myself (kidding... Kinda)

Nothing but commiseration over here! Our 4 year old golden sheds at least a small dog every day, I swear. We also don't get her professionally groomed that often (maybe 4x a year), and don't full bathe her much more than every other month unless she gets super-muddy. We do Furminate, but I don't think it makes a HUGE difference.

I'm totally going to get a Roomba for the tufts of fur -- management not cure, I guess. Ideally we also wouldn't let her up on our furniture...but where's the fun in that? ;)

I have a 3.5 year old Golden and I totally get it. We use a knock-off furminator I got on Amazon (MIU brand) and it does get the excess hair that regular grooming brushes miss. I have friends who get their Golden's coat trimmed a couple times a year but I also know it doesn't exactly get rid of the hair because they will still shed, just shorter strands.
It sucks I know, but I've read that they need their coat for regulating their body temperature for the cold weather.

I have heard adding a little olive oil to their food can help but haven't tried it.

At least they make up for it by being super affectionate and adorable????

You could ask about using thinning shears as well to keep some long hair and some short. We had a sheepdog/collie and we kept him with a puppy cut because he matted too much and it was hot in FL summers. But they don't shed and have a much different type of coat.

@pinkcupcake: what these ladies said--Furminators are 1000% better than any other comb on earth. I have a lab whose coat is a nightmare for about 6 weeks twice a year, so can imagine the frustration of living that year-round. When she's in shedding season, I'll sit there and fill a FULL paper grocery bag's worth of compressed dog hair, and usually could keep going but I get bored after an hour. better than waiting to vacuum it up, though. We also use Furminator brand dog shampoo and dog conditioner, which is supposed to loosen dead fur, and I think does its job. Life definitely got better for me after getting that comb--hope it's as effective on a long-haired dog as it is on short. Good luck/God help you  :good luck:
ETA: have you considered getting a robot vacuum? they're expensive and not sure they're any match for your problem, but I know many people who've gotten them and said it helped keep the day-to-day tolerable.

@pinkcupcake: Retrievers are notorious shedders. We've always had labs (though our last one passed about a year ago), and honestly the Furminator and Epi-Pet shampoo and coat spray were the only things that controlled it. Unfortunately, they still tend to blow a coat out twice a year, but it was greatly improved when on those products.

@PawPrints: Hi! Yes, we've gotten her groomed a few times in the past - not as much as we would like because it's so expensive (last time it was close to $80), and although it helped with the shedding somewhat, we were still covered in fur 24/7 :( I'm not sure about whether we're using a Furminator - I will check.

We bathe her about once every other week. It's so much harder in the winter months, because it's freezing cold/wet outside so we have to bathe her inside and then our bathroom is a mess...

Thank you for your sympathy :( I get so frustrated sometimes. I know people think I'm awful for complaining about her, but unless you've lived with a Golden, I don't think you know HOW MUCH THEY SHED. :(

Have you gotten her groomed at all in the past? We've done a normal Golden haircut for ours several times, and they preserve both the undercoat and the outer coat since of course they need them both, but gets them both down pretty trim and helps reduce shedding a lot. We don't do it that often though since it's expensive. Are you using a Furminator when you brush? Doing frequent baths to loosen more fur?

Sorry don't know if I'm any help, but I definitely offer sympathy. Our situation is not nearly as bad as yours but we vacuum a lot and there is still a wad of dog fur on its way into LO's mouth every time I look down.

My Golden is driving me crazy. We brush her every single day but she still sheds CONSTANTLY. I have to vacuum every single day and I still find a small golden retriever in the vacuum canister - and this is during the winter months, when she sheds much less than summer.

I'm at my wits' end. I can't deal w/the long gold fur on everything anymore. Has anyone gotten their Golden a puppy cut or short hair cut? Will that completely ruin her undercoat? She's an indoor dog and her fur is clean, not matted.

Any help would be so greatly appreciated. I'm drowning in fur.
