@illumina: Yes...totally normal. M gnaws on her hands like she hasn't eaten in a week!

@lawbee11: she nurses 5mins on each side, maybe 5mins extra if she's really sleepy. If I pump in the middle of the day in place of a feed, I get 2.5oz combined max. Yeah, that's what I thought about the hands...but is it normal to chomp so ferociously?!

It seems like 2 oz extra should be enough. How long does she nurse for? Do you ever pump? If so, how much do you normally get? I know pumping output isn't a good indicator of how much baby is getting, but if you get a good amount when you pump I think it's safe to assume your LO is getting a good amount, too (especially with her weight gain). Could she just have to burp? I don't think the hand in the mouth means she's hungry...if I fed M every time her hand was in her mouth she'd be eating all day long!

@illumina: hmm well the hands in the mouth thing is just a developmental thing--totally normal and doesn't necessarily mean hunger! If you're feeding her slowly, and she will settle afterward then it's probably fine! You can always try giving another .5 oz of formula maybe 10 min later and see if she'll take it? But I don't really hve any experience with formula feeding so I am probably not the best person to talk about it!

@hilsy85: she usually just puts her hands in her mouth and then settles down a bit. Just not sure whether I am misreading this as teething when she's still hungry. She does settle for naps well though, which I'm not sure she'd so if she was hungry? I'm not sure.

@illumina: ah that I don't know...are you doing paced feedings with the formula? Is it possible she's eating so quickly that she doesn't realize that she's full when the bottle is empty? If she takes a paci, maybe offer one after she's done eating, maybe she just wants to suck more? If she is legit hungry (like doesn't calm down with sucking, really seems to want more) then I guess give her, but I am no help on amounts!

@hilsy85: more formula? How much? I feel like I'm just picking random amounts...this is why I dislike supplementing :(

Could be a growth spurt, could be that she is catching up on weight from earlier? I would feed her, since it seems like she is hungry and she is still on the small side!

For the past couple of weeks we have been supplementing LO's 4 daytime feeds with 2oz of formula. I BF her first until she comes off of her own accord, either because she is falling asleep or because she is frustrated there is no more milk coming. I then do 2 night feeds, BF only.

From 8th Jan to 21st Jan she gained 1lb 1oz. Then from the 21st to today she has gained 7oz. These seem a little on the high side to me. However--after giving her the formula, she still never seems satisfied--she'll squirm around and sometimes do that high pitched squeal when the bottle is finished. Sometimes I try BF-ing her before I put her down for a nap and she will suck for a short while and then flail about in frustration, I guess because there is still not much there.

So--I would have thought with this kind of gain I could look to be scaling back the formula by 0.25-0.5oz, but should I ignore her signs of not being full? I mean, maybe she is frustrated about something else, like teeth, I don't know. She has taken to chomping down on my shoulder sometimes and I don't know if that is hunger or not. I'm reluctant to give her more formula so not to overfeed.
