One we decided to train, DS went commando or undies starting day 1. For awhile he held his poop until nap or nighttime (pull up), but eventually he he stopped relying on pull ups altogether.

@maddyz: Pull-ups are for travel when he's home it's straight underwear. Thanks for your input. :)

@mrsbubbletea: exactly!! That's what makes it so tricky!

@yoursilverlining: I hear you about the not wanting to change the sheets and clean the bed!! Same over here

@kes18: That's awesome!!

My first was about 29mo when we potty trained her. We just did 2 days naked at home (like the 3 day method but 2 days) and sent her to daycare in underwear the next day. It is what daycare suggested even though I've seen some kids do pullups. We did underwear. She had occasional nap accidents and still does but that is basically it. We do pullups at night still (and it will be 1 year in September) and she wakes up dry most of the time now. But I'm in no rush, they don't confuse her to wear them at night.

We briefly tried pull-ups, but for many kids they will just delay potty training because they are still like a diaper. That was def the case for my LO. We then went straight to underwear and the first day there were several accidents. Next day about half as many. Down to zero shortly thereafter because she could really feel when she was wet and her body cues. Poop took maybe a couple weeks more to fully master. Took her out and about from day 1 in underwear; I just made sure I had a spare change of clothes on me at all times and wipes.

We waited for 30 days of dry nights before switching from a pull-up at night to a diaper. LO sleeps in the bed with me and I did NOT want to be up changing and washing my own bed’s king sized sheets in the middle of the night.

@mrsbubbletea: I remember being a bit militant with our older about getting rid of her night diaper ( I was also very pregnant with #2 and really didn't want a relapse). I really limited her amount of fluids at dinner, no drinks after dinner and must use the potty before bed. I also made her use the potty as soon as she woke. No more laying in bed playing. If I heard her making noise, she got out of bed.

As luck had it, she hit her 7 nights exactly one week before my scheduled c-section with #2. I was sooo nervous about a relapse. I think she had 1 or 2 accidents after that. I distinctly recall going in her room one morning and smelling urine. She has a full bed, so she just moved out of the wet spot *face palm* and slept in her wet undies.

She had been day trained for probably 6 months before we reached this point. She had many runs up to 5 consecutive nights and wet on night 6.

I started training my son when he was just over 3 years old (long story, we missed a window of opportunity when he was younger and then we had an international trip I didn't want to deal with bathrooms for), so he was in underwear immediately during the day. It meant I had to learn where bathrooms were, hello, grocery store, but it was worth it.

@bubblegum: I think this is so kiddo dependent. We are potty training right now thanks to an amazing teacher at our daycare, she pushed it when it needed pushing. We've been in underwear for 5 days now. And she's had 2 pee accidents. Poop is a different ballgame for her. I'm not sure how we will cross that bridge yet. For reference she's 2 y 9 m.

Our older started training much earlier and seemed to take longer. We are very much a follow their lead family and don't do anything that has much structure.

@MamaG: ok I think I need to just bite the bullet on nighttime. We never used real pull ups but quite a while ago, like way before potty training, I switched to those huggies "diaper pants" that have elastic on the sides just because they fit my gigantic baby best!

@bubblegum: oh I was going to say too!! My son also goes short days to school and I still send him in his diapers cause no one tells me definitively if he pees on the potty there. Especially this summer, it's at a different site with a ton of different teachers, and it seems a little hectic for him. I plan to definitely send him to school in undies when he starts going two full days at the regular campus at the end of the month!

@erinbaderin: @mrsbubbletea: Our nighttime rule is 7 consecutive nights dry. We never used pull ups though. My kiddos only have the options of diapers or underwear. I can't even begin to explain my hangup on pullups.

Having a few accidents is totally fine. It's really on you to prompt until they are consistently asking to go, especially in a new and distracting place. My DS treated pullups as a diaper, they really aren't any different. I would never have been able to potty train him if I had him in pull ups and expected him not to pee in them. We do use them for overnight and sometimes for nap. But often he refuses the nap time one and stats dry.

@bubblegum: not very often at all! Maybe once a week. You just have to prepare for quickly changing clothes and for me, if it's poop, I would throw away the undies if I were out and about! Luckily poop accident only has happened once.

@mrsbubbletea: How often do you feel like accidents occur?! DH is a SAHD and for the most part they're home a lot but I don't want to box DS in but I know with DH having DD too, it makes things harder for him.

@bubblegum: I kept putting my son in diapers when we went out unless conditions were absolutely perfect (he had just peed, pooped already, short outing) and would only bring his travel potty half the time. Then I realized I was holding him back! He would ask me to go potty and since I wasn't used to doing it itside I literally told him twice to go in his diaper. Then I realized what the h is wrong with me! And switched to undies and always try to bring his potty. Using public restrooms required bribes (and sometimes threats... we will go home right now!!!) st first. :) now he's always in undies except for naps and bedtime !

@erinbaderin: That's kinda the sucky part. DS doesn't use the potty at school. He's only there for two and half hours but they don't have urinals and they try to make him sit when I've told them to please just try to have him stand and catch him when he says potty. The struggle!!

I might still have B in pull-ups except that after a week of always using the potty his daycare told me they thought he was ready for underwear. I didn't want to deal with the hassle of accidents and always needing to know where the nearest bathroom is. Now I'm trying to figure out when to stop using pull-ups at night.

We did commando for a month, then underwear. Never did pull ups. We wanted her to get used to the feeling of wet. We don't have poop accidents (knock on wood) but she regularly pees in the car seat. I have a puppy pad in it to save on cleaning, and I bring lots of extra pants with us!

DS has been potty training since November and he's FINALLY to the point where we have no accidents at home. Only pee trained but will ask for a pull-up so he can poop.

My question is when did you officially take LO out during the day in just underwear? When did you feel the time was right?
