I've had both. Viral is goopy and red and kind of gross...but bacterial is painful, itchy, SUPER RED and you literally have to pry your eyes open from the crust several times a day.

My Dr advised that pink eye and ear infections frequently go together. K would often not spike a fever until the ear infection was super progressed.

My Dr said his rule of thumb is if it is goopey in the eyelashes...its likely pink eye. K had goopey eyes when she was little that were caused by under developed tear ducts...

We had viral pink eye this winter with no redness, just lots of greenish goop. It was contagious though, and the girls kept passing it back and forth.

We had this issue last month. My doctor says you can have virus-related conjunctivitis that isn't pink eye (which is bacterial). You just have to watch it carefully to make sure it doesn't TURN into a bacterial infection. She told me to think about it as another cold symptom (like a runny nose coming out the eye). I just kept it wiped with Boogie Wipes since its a saline solution and used Aquaphor liberally over his face since we were wiping his eyes or nose every 5 seconds.

My LO has had this a few times about midway through a bad cold. We never had to treat it. It was goopy eye with no redness in the actual eye, and no itchiness or irritation, as far as I could tell.

With babies, they don't know how to remove the icky stuff from their bodies. Goopy eyes can be similar to snot and sneezing because that's how their body works stuff out of it. My pediatrician showed me the difference between viral and bacterial pinkeye on Google. Bacterial pinkeye is super gross looking. Viral is nowhere near as bad.

That can be a viral infection working its way out of the system, especially if you've had colds and congestion going on. We had something similar in the summer with LO, and that's really all it was. It went away on its own, we just cleaned her eyes with water and (an old Russian old wives trick) strong brewed black tea.

My sitter's kid had this a few weeks ago. They prescribed eyedrops over the phone and said it was just from the cold and the drops probably weren't necessary, but she could try them if she wanted to. DD got it a few days later, but hers cleared up within 24 hours so I never called the doc.

E had pink eye last year with just some goop and redness. But also, T had this nasty goop coming out of his eye once and it was just a viral thing and the ped said it happens a LOT! But, you know...better to be sure, because pinkeye is contagious and treatable and super gross and irritating. But T literally had gobs of snot dripping out.

@youboots: Yes, absolutely could be an ear infection.

My girls both get yucky eyes with colds though. The little one currently has one eye that is watery and some crust on it in the morning. The crust is yellow/green but it's not an infection (yet).

@youboots: DS had this happen around Christmas this year, and his eyes would glue shut at night. It would take 15 minutes of soaking them with a wet washcloth to get them to open. I thought for sure it was pinkeye because I had never seen anything like it, but it ended up just being a true sinus infection with a bonus double ear infection. I guess if they're congested/compacted enough, the mucus has no where else to go but out the eyes. It was disgusting. But at least it wasn't pinkeye!

Recently my son woke up a few days here and there with crusty eyes and no other symptoms other than some stuffiness which I attributed to dry heat so I thought nothing of it. One morning he woke up with his one eye completely swollen so I took him to the ped and he had an ear infection. I was completely shocked. None of his previous ear infections ever presented that way and he always had a fever and I could tell he felt terrible.

Lo had this last week and I took her in yesterday for a suspected ear infection (she did have one) and asked since I was there anyway--apparently it's just another cold symptom sometimes, when the sinuses behind the eyes are congested. The dr didn't seem alarmed at all, it was just like "yeah that happens sometimes"

T had a fiver that turned into a cold about 3 weeks ago. She's still a little stuffy, and a touch congested but I think it's the winter ick so I have not been worried. She is eating and sleeping great, no fever or other symptoms. On Monday she woke up with goopy eyes they were a little red and puffy. Just crud in there but no pinkeye. I called my Drs office and left a message to see if they want to see her but my call was not returned (boo) so I figured no big deal. I'm going to call the nurse advice line now. Could this be a symptom of something more serious. To me it seems like allergies but I think she's too young 11 mo. Any ideas/feedback? I don't want to take her in needlessly but it's not going away.
