@PurpleUnicorn: you should get a splat mat! then you can just wash it :) You could even just buy PUL fabric by the yard and lay it out, it'd be cheaper.

Yep, solids are so gross. So so gross. We've let him do loaded spoon/self feeding and that's the only thing I hate - how gross it gets everywhere!

Haha, my LO loves eating so much that she always wanted the food in her mouth. She wasn't very messy at all for fear she'd waste food I think.

i've found ways to make cleaning easier. i've been doing BLW since the start and it's been that messy since day one. I used to let him eat yogurt byhimself, but no more, that is the only thing i feed him!

i bought a bunch of really cheap footed sleepers which are essentially his "bib", otherwise he would need a bath after every meal. It creates a little more laundry, but that's easy since i do laundry constantly anyway. I also put a regular bib over the sleeper so it doesn't get completely food encrusted.

We also spread open a large garbage bag and put it under the high chair. it catches all the food that gets flung to the floor and i don't have to clean it - just toss it!! it's wasteful i know of the bags, so if the food we are serving is not *too* messy, i will try to skip the bag.

can't get away from cleaning that high chair though! I am happy i went with the ikea antilop as it is fairly easy to clean.

They are messy, especially when we have LO practice feeding himself. We taught him that he can't touch the spoon when we feed him, so he's pretty good about keeping his hands away when we spoon feed. With bits of food, we have started using a fork - really neat!

LO and I battle over the spoon all the time, and sometimes she'll just let go and the food goes flicking all over the wall. ughhhh so annoying! i've found that giving her another spoon to play with and let her feel like she is feeding herself really helps.

LOL!!

So we have just done cereal and she tries to grab the bowl and spoon. I am scared what she is going to do when she eats purees and starts on regular food.

I load up the spoon and she grabs it from me, flips it around, puts the wrong end in her mouth, and flings the loaded part of the spoon around so food flies everywhere. We have to wash and clean the entire high chair every night.

Offering her foods that don't require a spoon means she rubs all of the little bits all over the surface of the high chair, and then drops all the pieces next to her so they get ground into the corners of the seat.

She has avocado on her nose right now.
