I'm getting mine tomorrow! DS is 18 months old and I'm sick of condoms, birth control pills, and worrying about getting pregnant. My old insurance didn't cover the Mirena or pills, so I was only on the pills for a few months when my dr gave me a bunch of sample packs. My new insurance has a high copay for pills, but covers the Mirena 100%!

@MegWag: I conceived quickly after the Mirena was removed, hopefully you will too when you're ready.

@MegWag: It took me 6 cycles to get pregnant and only one cycle was 28 days and that's the one we got pregnant on. However, they don't think I O'd anywhere near when I would have for a normal cycle so we don't think I'm as far a long as we thought.
It messed me up quite a bit but my younger sister got pregnant right away after having her's removed.

@Honeybee: That makes sense! I'll have to remember for next time to have it done when things are still a bit loosey goosey :)

@Crisark: That's good to know! They said fertility should return to normal almost immediately, but sounds like that isn't always the case. We'll want to try again in about a year I think.

I had a lot of cramping the first 24 hours after having mine placed. After that it was a piece of cake. The removal was nothing at all but my period took 6 months to regulate.
all in all I'd recommend it but it was difficult TTC after removal.

@MegWag: I think part of why it didn't hurt for me is that I had it inserted at my 6 week postpartum check up. So my cervix was still soft and kinda open.

@MegWag: Oh yeah - they had to use a "gripper" to move my cervix out of the way. And it's even more uncomfortable than it sounds. Sitting hurt for 2 days . . .

It wasn't too bad really and I'm fine now, 24 hours later. I guess I just hadn't thought about it hurting at all, so wasn't prepared. Obviously, if someone is rooting around in your uterus, you're going to be a little uncomfortable... duh, Meg!
I've heard great things about it (even from my friend who freakishly got pregnant with twins while she had one!) so I don't mind a little discomfort for a day :)

@yoursilverlining: I had been on the mini-pill, but decided to get the Mirena after a pregnancy scare. I decided I needed more peace of mind!

@Honeybee: She didn't say specifically, but she mentioned that it was very short several times and seemed slightly confused that I had had a baby only 6 mos ago. Apparently some women's uteri are so short that they can't even have a Mirena, but she said I should be fine.

Yes, the insertion hurt like a mofo, but it was awesome to have no period for several years and peace of mind that there would be no "oops" pregnancy.

I got Mirena before I had a baby and yes, it did hurt! The day I got it in I was already dreading the day I would get it removed! The pain was well worth it and I absolutely loved having it. I never had to think about it and my periods were lighter also. Now that I had my baby I'm definitely going to get it again!

mine hurt like a mofo!! i've never given birth though, so my cervix would be more closed & harder to get into. they told me i'd have cramping after & might want to go home for the day, but i walked a TON, went shopping & out with friends.... i knew i was having cramps, but they told me to expect them so i didn't think too much about it, turns out my uterus was contracting to expel the thing! then i had to pretty much sit on a toothpick for a few days while i had a course of antibiotics before she would remove it all the way =( she said i can't have another one until i've had kids because i have a tiny & super strong uterus!

My insertion was super easy; like a little pinch and it was all done!

Did the doctor say it hurt more because of your short uterus?

I haven't gotten it, but a few of my friends have. Most said it was uncomfortable but not that big a deal. One, who had already had a baby, said it was almost as bad as labor! I guess it depends and you were just unlucky :( On the plus side, you don't have to worry about birth control for 5 years now! That's a really big plus.

I've heard from SO many people that it hurt, but mine was a piece of cake! I must have had a really great doctor inserting it. I've had pap tests that hurt WAY more than that.

I had a Mirena before ever being pregnant and man did that hurt. I was totally fine a day or two later and enjoyed four years without a period. Despite the initial discomfort I'd do it again.

Man, was that more uncomfortable than I expected. Ouch!
I also learned that I have an exceptionally short uterus, especially for someone who has had a baby.
Anyone else experience a lot of discomfort with their Mirena fitting?
