@Dandelion: ehhh... He's just stepping back and letting me handle it. He knows the LC has a plan and is working with the ped and that we're going at it responsibly. I also shared with him that I wouldn't be EPing for a year and that for every month he didn't get BM, it'd cost $200 in formula. So that kind of got his attention.

@septemberlove: Wow, that sounds awesome!!! Sounds like you guys are really making progress!!! I'm so happy for you! Based on what you said about how much he normally eats, how much he took from the bottle this time, and how much you pumped, it definitely sounds to me like he drank 2+ oz! Too bad you don't have a way to know for sure, but it definitely sounds like progress!!

Thanks :) I'm so relieved! We actually just got him to latch again and he stayed on much better and only had a few shallow latches. My nipples don't hurt nearly as much this time.

My mom is actually here so she helped me play around with positioning and talked about what she did and the positions and holds she used.

This time I sat on the couch with bed pillows to support LO in the football hold and that worked so much better once we got situated.

We've always changed LO's diaper before feedings, to wake him up (this kinda goes back to the NICU days when he was a sleepy preemie) but I'm thinking next time I may try changing him after he eats so that I'm getting him latched before he's had a chance to be wide awake and in omg-I'm-starving mode. The hardest part was getting him into a good position and situating pillows to support him while he was grumbling and wanting fed.

I offered him 3oz after he breastfed, thinking he may have transferred an ounce again, but he only took 1.5oz from the bottle. He typically eats 4oz in a feed, so I'm kind of thinking he transferred about 2-2.5oz this time. I pumped afterwards and only got about 10cc on the side he nursed on, I usually get 2.5oz from each breast. So... I really think he transferred at least 2oz! I don't have a scale to prove it though.

I really hope things continue to go well! It's such an awesome feeling to finally get to breastfeed him!

That's awesome!!! Football was my go-to hold when she was little. Once we got the hang of it I could walk around with her in football in one hand and cook/mop with the other. Great job, you're totally getting there!!

Yay! I haven't commented but have been following your ped/BFing/LC posts. So glad your appointment went well yesterday and that you were able to get LO latched at home!

I hear you on finding the perfect pillow configuration. My pillow situation has gotten a little out of control: I have three different BFing pillows and I also use a number of non-BFing pillows. Different pillows work in different locations (e.g. couch vs. bed). Our living room has been completely overtaken by pillows!

I hope things continue to improve for you with BFing. My LC is pretty much my hero and it sounds like yours is equally awesome.

Yay!!! Congratulations, Mama! Latch troubles can be so terribly frustrating, so good for you working on it and getting help!! I know that in the beginning, I was ALWAYS bringing my breast to Xander instead of the other way around and it was definitely hard to adjust how I was doing it. But definitely bringing him to you will help with the latch. I also find the football hold difficult because I can't SEE his bottom lip, so I can't visibly check his latch. My preferred position is cross-cradle because I can position his head with my hand and support my boob with the other and then I can check and see both his top and bottom lips to ensure they're on correctly. Good luck to you and your continued breastfeeding adventure!

After a great LC appt yesterday, I put LO to breast last night and he latched immediately. He popped off a few times, but he's getting the hang of it. We still have a lot of work to do, but it was a big relief to be able to get him to latch on my own, without the LC's help.

I'm experimenting with different holds, different chairs in the house, and different pillows to see what works best. Last night we tried sitting upright in bed with bed pillows as support for the football hold. The pillows were sliding around quite a bit and I was bringing the breast to him instead if bringing him to the breast, and I think that impacted his latch a little. There were a few times he was definitely too shallow.

We had to give him a bottle afterwards (baby steps, I know he's going to need time to work on his latch and getting used to breastfeeding after 6 weeks of bottles) but instead of taking his typical 4oz, he took 3oz, which makes me think he probably was able to transfer close to an oz.

I'm so thrilled with the progress we've made, finding someone who supports us, getting him latched, and him transferring an ounce. It's way more than I ever dreamed we'd accomplish on day one. We're going to keep on keeping on and just work on finding the hold and position that works best :)

I'm so excited and so beyond grateful for all the wonderful support I've gotten on HB!
