I wish we had more information, because based on just this one article, it sounds like both the dad and another person started beating on the cop, so it sounds like he fired his weapon in self defense. We dont know what speed the cop was riding or anything like that. At least based on the information in this article, it sounds like the cop did the right thing - he tried to avoid hitting the girl and injured himself in the process. The girl was hurt, but not seriously injured, so I'm not sure why the dad started flipping out on the officer and assaulting him. I can only imagine how devestating it was for the father, but his daughter was still alive, injured, yes. But alive. He didn't need to go and start attacking the officer.
