For me going to college equaled following my dreams.

I genuinely hope that our children want to go to college- we plan on paying for our kids undergrad. But if that isn't in their dreams, we'd still support them.

My cousin always wanted to work for Apple. He was a huge computer geek and would spend hours taking apart and putting together computers in his spare time.
He was in his senior year of college and he was in an elevator and overheard two guys talking about a problem they were having with their Mac. He told them "I had the same problem and this is how I fixed it."
Turns out those guys were in town recruiting for Apple and wanted to hire him on the spot. He dropped out of college and has been working for Apple for 10 years.
My Aunt and Uncle are pissed that he never finished college. They think they "wasted" the 3.5 years of tuition on him.
I find it hard to think of a better outcome than the one my cousin got. How would a diploma have made his life any better?

Well, DH and I both quit university to pursue career opportunities and we've done ok with it. I know it doesn't work for everyone, and we'll encourage future LO's to do what feels best for them, but I can definetely see postponing/not going to college if the situation is right.

In Corporate America, you do what you gotta do to get your foot in the door! If it's my diploma that gets me started, bring it on! Unfortunately for me, my diploma won't get me feet in any doors. lol

@banana: Yeah professional sports was the only thing I could come up with as well. You know, it is kind of tough. Even with professional sports, unless you are talented enough to skip college sports and go straight to the pros, I think you need to get your degree. There are so many athletes who wind up ill-equipped to deal with life (and wind up totally broke/bankrupt b/c of it) and college is a great avenue to test the waters of adulthood without having all of the negative consequences.

@banana: Well, if I thought my son had a shot at being Kobe Bryant then sure! Maybe we could agree that if nothing panned out after a few years then it would be back to college.

Yes, I am pretty sure I got several jobs only because of the name on my diploma. They barely even bothered to ask me any questions in the interviews!

@andrea: That's the hard part. It's never a sure thing! I debated with my husband about that and he still insisted that it would be worth the risk. At the end, he made some good valid points and I ended up agreeing with him (for the most part).

And I"m sure your diploma definitely helped you a lot when you graduated. I would LOVE for my LO to go to an Ivy League school too! Both for the education and the diploma. :D

It would have to be an amazing talent and pretty much a sure thing - then I would be fine with it.

I feel like I barely learning anything in college, too. But I went to an Ivy League school so I had the name on my diploma and sadly, that seemed to be enough when I graduated! Probably not the case anymore, though.

@highwire: The example my DH and I were using was professional sports. I asked him why Kobe Bryant never went to college and he said "Well, would YOU? He had an opportunity to become a HUGE basketball star. Why would you go to college and risk being injured and then kill your dream?" And so the debate started. :)

@looch: Totally agree with everything you said.

I also think a college degree is a necessity and will only become moreso going forward, especially in a tightened economy.

I think a degree is important, but I would encourage my child to follow their dreams, they could always finish college later. I personally wished I would have taken some time off to travel the world, but I was lucky enough to do so after college too.

I'm having trouble coming up with an example of a dream that would prohibit someone from finishing college. I think a degree is extremely important, and I'd want my kids to finish their schooling ASAP if they could. It is so much harder to go back and get the degree later on.

@looch: Interesting insight. My best friend is on the same boat as you. She said she would insist on having her child graduate college because of the learning process and finishing what you started, not so much obtaining an actual degree.

I'd want them to finish college, esp. if they only had a year or so to go. It gets so much harder to finish when you're older with other commitments and stuff, plus once you have your degree, no one can take it away from you. It's not about what you learn, but the process of learning that's important.

I would encourage them to follow their dreams if it were realistic to do so. Not just sit around and so nothing an label it following their dreams though. It's not like you can't go back to college, or like Leialou said, take classes simultaneously online just to stay sort of in the college game.

My DH and I were discussing this topic last night and I thought it was really interesting. If your son or daughter had some sort of unbelieveable talent and had an amazing once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pursue his/her dreams, but it would mean dropping out of college, would you encourage it? My husband and I both agreed that we would encourage it, even if it meant not graduating college. We may change our minds later but for now, we would encourage it.

What are your thoughts on this? Would you encourage your children to pursue their dreams if it meant dropping out of college?
