You guys are brilliant!! I bought some lentils and dried apricots today, so we'll give those a try and add polenta to the list for next week. :) thanks!!

@Mrs. Tricycle: My LO doesn't like the tiny grains, either. I know it isn't quite what you are looking for, but she loves polenta, both mush and cut into fries. The good thing about it is you can doctor it up with anything, like saute it in a healthy oil with viggies or top it with cheese for added calories. You can introduce new flavors using it, too. One of her favs is the organic basil and sun-dried tomato polenta that they sell in a log at Whole Foods.

Maybe amaranth? It's teeny tiny and I believe a grain. I just made LO a dal recipe, lentils and split peas are pretty caloric and the mush better than quinoa. We had gagging with quinoa at first but after a few times he got it. What about peanut butter or ricotta cheese?

I was going to suggest quinoa, but looks like that doesn't work!

Oatmeal was a favorite for a long time, but it's not the best nutrient wise. I would mix it with a few teaspoons of quinoa to bump up the protein.

Dried fruit! Lots of nutrients and high in calories. You can soak in a little warm water and then purée.

I'm trying to bump up the calorie value of the Trikester's diet, and was hoping to introduce some grains. He eats chunkier mashes like avocados and finger food like puffs and cut up melon without problems. I've tried both barley and quinoa - they make him gag to the point of vomiting. I thought it was the texture or flavor so I puréed each with pears and apple juice but same effect (along with an allergic reaction to the cinnamon I threw in).

What grains would you try next? Other nutrient dense foods I should try? He's just hit the 9 month mark.
