We are getting a potty just to get him used to the idea of it for a while (he's 13 months). Personally the marathon sessions aren't appealing to me, I'd rather take the gradual approach. But I don't mind diapers and am in no rush, just my style- everyone is different :)

Other than the withholding and making sure they go often, I don't really see right or wrong answers here, it is just doing what fits you as a parent, your kid, and your family. Go with your gut, but also your daughter may be the one to decide when she's really ready.

Just do some research first. There has been a lot to suggest that potty-training too early can cause issues with withholding and such.

I say if grandma wants to invest the time into it, go for it!! There is no reason not to and it will save on diapers :)

LO will be 12 months in may and we plan to let him play outside naked all summer and hope that will get the potty training started.

My mom potty trained all of us (3 girls) right after we turned 1.
She thinks it's ridick and funny that my 22 month old is still in diapers!
Mom is visiting in early MArch and we're going to potty train! DD will be 23 months old.
I'm so excited!!
I started EC with my daughter when she was 6 months old and caught pees and poops. I just got really lazy about it. BLAH. I totally regret not potty training earlier.
I would give it a go if I were you!

We started sitting lo on the potty at 6 months old. He started peeing about 12 months old and he will be fully trained by 2 years old. He has never fought us and we just go with what he shows us he's ready for. And if he's in diapers for a day oh well. And if grandma wants to do it and you don't, I think your lo will know what goes for each person. So you don't have to take that on.

Elimination communication is very common with older generations and certain cultures (especially Eastern cultures) although it doesn't always go by that name. We started DD out on the potty at 3 months, and she was totally potty trained by 18 months. We started DS out at 2 months and hope to have him trained by the end of the year (21 months).

Do you have specific questions about how it might affect your LO? Or are you just feeling pressured by your mom to do something you're not interested in? I don't think either way is better, it's just a matter of preference and what you feel comfortable with. But you shouldn't defer to your mom just because she's pressuring you and you live in her house.

@littleveesmommy: Well, it wasn't a day...more like a marathon "stay home" week. We did use pull ups when going out, but I asked him every 30 min or so if he had to go. I did that at home, though, too. Just set a time for 45 minutes over and over and told him to potty.

@katiew92081: That is why I thought I would do with DD since it seemed like the norm. Pretty neat how kids just learn and fit all clicks one day.

@Mrs. Pen: @BoogieBea: Ah so that is what elimination communication is! I saw some articles but didn't read into it since I didn't think of potty training so soon. Thanks for the heads up on the thread! I'll have to check it out.

My mom was the same. She actually insisted almost right after birth. She did that with my sister and I as babies. She said she figured out when we usually poop and she would just squat us over the toilet and eventually, we just learned to only poop in that position. I think it is now called elimination communication? I think there's a post somewhere on here about that. I was too lazy to take that on and didn't potty train my son til almost 3. My daughter now at 19 months is basically potty training herself, just from seeing her brother use the potty. She poops in the toilet 80% of the time now.

Sounds a lot like Elimination Communication to me... which I'm not brave enough for but has worked for parents... there are a lot of articles and blog posts about it.

I waited until ds was coherent enough to "get it". He was just before turning 3, cause he needed to be trained for preschool. I rpetty much took away the diapers, put underwear on him and let him pee himself a few days until in one instance it finally clicked. It took a lot longer with pooping, though. But, we dealt with it for a while and he got it figured out finally.

We moved in with my parents in November after our apt lease was up and were in the process of house hunting, and will probably be here until summer. My mom mentioned to me that I should pick up a potty so she can sit DD on it during the day to begin potty training her. That is what she did with me and my siblings when we were young, and she said you just keep doing it so she will be trained by the time she is 2. So this is a 11+ month potential potty training process.

I know Mrs Bee and other moms on HB start potty training after 2 using the 3-day potty training method or some other less-than-double-digit-month-method. What are your thoughts on potty training so early? Pros? Cons?

My mom is very insistent that this is the way to do it and if I don't, I'm delaying my daughter. So I'm not sure what to do. Of course it would be great to have DD out of diapers early rather than late, but does anyone think its too early?
