My parents and my IL's chose what they wanted to be called since LO is the first on both sides. My parents are Nana and Papa, IL's are Grandma and Grandpa. Initially MIL wanted to be called Nana but was pissed when we called her "Nana Firstname" and my mom "Nana"... so she decided one day to be Grandma instead.

LO can't say Grandma and Grandpa yet, but calls them Gee-ma and Gee-pa (hard G sound).

We had the grandparents choose as LO is the first grandkid on both sides. In-laws chose Grandma and Grandpa, my parents chose Mem and Pepere. (Mem because she didn't want to be called Memere...it sounded "too old"). BUT LO is not speaking yet, so who knows what she will actually call them!

Growing up we referred to my grandparents as Grandma/Grandpa last name. Out of all of my cousins no one ever made up their own names for them. Our nephews call my in-laws Pappy and MawMaw so our future kids will also use those names. My FIL is even listed as Pappy in my phone  I am the oldest in my family so we'll have to wait and see what nicknames my parents get. I have a step mom too so that will be interesting because my mom doesn't like to share.

LO is 22 months and came up with her own names for her grandparents. My dad is baba, my mom is gramma-cookie (gee, could that have anything to do with the fact my mom always bakes cookies with/for LO :silly: ) and my MIL is "agwagga" (ah-gwah-ga) - have no idea where that last one came from, but it is definitely LO's name for her and only her! My FIL and step-MIL don't really have names yet but they don't see LO as often as the other grandparents.

My parents decided to be Nanny/Nan and Papa.
IL's are Vavu (FIL) and Vavo (MIL) which is Portuguese. FIL moved to canada from Portugal when he was 2... I find it a bit strange that my very non-Portuguese MIL suggested Vavo for herself, but it doesn't bother me.
My grandmother (Grammie) is GGT to her 20 great grand kids - "Great Grammie Taylor"

My mom and step-dad are Gigi and Fritz. They were in their early late 40s when their first grandkid was born, so they didn't want to be Granma or Nana or anything like that. My stepdad chose Fritz cuz it's a family name. And my mom chose Gigi cuz her name is Ginny. She wanted Delilah, but my ex-step-brother-in-law had a sister named Delilah. My ILs are Pop and Nunu. I think that's just tradition in my husband's family. And then D was my dad's first grandkid, and he chose to be Grampa, which is what we called our grandfathers growing up.

So far my mom is called Memma (sounds like ma'am-ma). DD only says it when shown a picture of my mom or after I say grandma. We'll see how it evolves.

She has something for Grandpa (my dad) but it's still changing. So far is sounds like Branbra

MIL will be Grandma. FIL is Granddad, he has 18 other grand-kids so that one is long standing.

@Smurfette: I know it's probably counter intuitive. But when pressed I just call them grandmother or grandfather last name. My parents always referred to their parents as grandmother or grandfather. DH's had different names. His dad's dad is grandpa and his dad's mom is actually her first name. Its always been that way because that's what DH decided to call her when he was two or three. But DH's family isn't big on titles, like aunt or great uncle or grandparent. My family is big on titles.

We just recognize that we may call them something but the kids may come up with their own name like @Mrs. Jump Rope. They don't have names down yet anyways. DS only has mama, dada, and DD's name down pat but he only just started really talking clearer within the past month or two. He's a late talker. I think that's the biggest thing. We'd rather he have something he can say that means something to him than trying to force something he can't pronounce it. :

@Smurfette: we kind of let Chloe choose? We referred to my mom as Grammy for a long time, and my dad as pappy. Somehow my mom ended up as nana & my dad pop-pop. I think she got nana from MY nana, who she now calls Big Nana. I think pop-pop came from her not being able to say pappy... So, basically what you said. We referred to the grandparents as one name, Chloe couldn't quite pronounce, and came up with her own version.

I'm just confused She alternates calling my mom nana and Grammy, but also calls MIL Grammy. I never know who she wants to visit with!

My mom decided to be Nana and she's his only grandmother. He has three Papaws though, my dad, DH's dad, and my stepdad. I wish my sister (who had the first grandchild) would have differentiated between dad and stepdad.

DH's dad just decided to call himself Papaw to his first grandchild so that's what it is.

I'll use last names to distinguish them to Xander. Like "Grammie <lastname> is coming over to play with you today!" Or "We're going to go visit Mimi and Grampa <lastname>!"

When I was pregnant, MIL went crazy trying to find something unique to be called other than grandma. (I think because she was trying to one up my mom being called 'grandma' in korean). Anyway, she said she wanted to be called "Oma" grandma in German...I said H-NO, because "Umma" is mom in korean and that was too confusing. She tried Nana for a bit when DS was an infant, but that didn't stick.

Anyway, DS knows my parents by the korean versions of grandma/pa and knows my ILs as grandma/grandpa - so no confusion :) He doesn't call any one by anything yet, so we'll see if it changes with his pronunciation.

@NaturallyCathy: I don't get how you let the child choose. I mean they don't talk talk for years. Then what do you refer to the grandparent in the mean time? I know now we talk to R about her grandparents. Say Nonni is coming to play with you. Go see Ponni when they come over, etc.......So referring to them so R learns their name. I get if they can't pronounce it, they come up with their own version. Like DH's nephew started calling FIL Poop (not sure what they were trying to get him to say) so it just stuck. I hate it but it just makes sense for all the grandkids to call them the same name.

We let the grandparents decide what preferences they had just as our grandparents did when we were kids- of course our son marches to his own drum and calls them all "gran-gran."

My parents are Grandma and Grandpa. My MIL is Omi, which is a derivative of Oma, which is the German word for Grandma. My MIL's mother is German and still alive, so she retains the title of Oma. My MIL said she might switch from Omi to Oma when her mother dies, which is a little morbid but whatever. I prefer to pick my battles.

My mom is Nanny to her
My moms mom is Nana
My moms dad... don't know. we call him Poppa, so maybe that or something like that
My moms boyfriend is Ronpa
My dad is Grandpa.. sometimes we ( his kids) call him Grandpa Ed cuz we think it has a nice ring
My dads finance is... we don't know..
DH"s dad is Poppa
Dh's mom is the spanish name for grandma ( whatever that is I cant remember)
dh's stepdad is the spanish name for grandpa

My mom was all excited to choose, and is Nana. Really hope LO cooperates with it, since she'll be disappointed if not. My dad wants to be Granddaddy, since like NaturallyCathy, he's still Daddy to me so it feels natural. My stepmom still hasn't decided, so unless she does she'll just be whatever LO calls her. FIL wants to be Papa Ray, and his wife is just Shay Shay (her name is Shay. She doesn't care for kids and has no interest in being anything that sounds "old."), MIL and step-FIL I don't remember, but they do have something, since there's already a grandchild on DH's side. Mine will be the first (only child except for 14yo and 12yo half-siblings by my dad) for my side, so we'll get to decide that.

Oh, and my mom previously declared that my stepdad will be Pop or PopPop, but they've been separated for years now and I barely talk to him, so I really don't know how much he'll be in LO's life, or even if he actually likes that as a name.

Nephews choose on DHs side. The oldest started calling FIL Poopa. SMIL is LiLi based on her name. My parents picked Nonni and Poppi.
