@Andrea: I agree, but I guess it doesn't matter in the end, really. I mean, it's a book of kid's art work. Chances are it isn't going to end up in the Library of Congress. I wouldn't mind at all if they intensified the colors on some items, we do it with our photographs all the time...I can't be trusted not to airbrush!

@looch: so fancy huh? I think some people might object, though, and prefer to preserve the original. I think enhancing the colors might be nice but I probably wouldn't want them to erase anything.

Interesting! Thanks for the info, something to keep in mind.

I like the "eliminating errant blemishes" part....it's like airbrushing for kid's art!

@looch: I think the quality is better than a simple scan. This is from their FAQ: We use both high tech scanners and sophisticated photography and lighting equipment to capture the perfect image of your children’s artwork. We will also do our best to eliminate errant blemishes, scratches or tears that were not part of the original mini masterpiece.

What does it mean when something is professionally digitized? Is it something that's different than scanning or uploading a photograph?

My husband is phenomenal with InDesign, so this will be one of his projects...too bad he doesn't know it yet.

I've also heard of taking digital photos and putting them in a digital frame. Another idea is to laminate some and use them for kid placemats.

That's great that they do the scanning for you! pricey, but would be worth saving time and energy in the long run, IMO!

For those that like to keep the art too, there are these frames that act like storage space too! I might get a few after we move. One frame holds up to 50 pieces and u can rotate which piece you want displayed.

@Andrea: That will be so cute! Don't want to take over your thread, but I'm curious to know what your playroom will look like! I'm jealous, we don't have a playroom :( We have an extra room we could use, the previous owners closed off our porch but they didn't put air conditioning in there. So for most of the year it's useless. I'm starting another playroom thread- hope you answer it!

@Mrs. Bee: oh ya, this is definitely a groupon type thing! i recently bought a groupon for a large canvas print. i think they have groupons for those all the time. so now i have a huge canvas print of the LO in my office to look at while i work. not to mention the 4 other pictures of her in my office. ahem.

@artbee: we are going to remodel her playroom so once we do that it will go in there. good idea on switching out the artwork a lot. i should do that in her playroom, too. :-)

@Andrea: My plan for that is to frame some cork board or put a clip in the frames so I don't puncture her artwork (pinterest ideas of course) so I can switch out artwork a lot. I already have a designated space in our hallway for it!

Yay for frameworthy art! Where are you going to put it?

I love RJ's artwork that he brings home every day from school! I trim the construction paper, put it into a sheet protector and keep it all in a binder. I also include the photo printouts of RJ at school that his teachers print out for us every now and then. He LOVES looking thru his art book. Any 3D art that would get ruined by being in the binder I hang on the wall in his play area.

@Andrea: I'll just end up taking pictures of the bigger ones. I'm an art therapist, and we learned that art is a part of you, so I hate the idea of throwing something so meaningful out. Every piece of artwork is so special! I really hate the idea of throwing the actual piece out.... but I know that I also don't want to be a crazy hoarder. Oh well.

@artbee: that is a cool idea, too! i'd need a jumbo sized scanner for the stuff i have so far, though, which is why i like this Plum Print book idea. i don't think i'd have a problem picking my favorite pieces! :-p

@Andrea: My plan is to scan and take pictures of it, and make my own photobook. I know it wouldn't be as great of quality, but I don't want to just pick my favorite pieces, that would be way too hard. I want it all, and that would get way too expensive.

@artbee: i like how they digitize and can size it down so that it'll keep well and is easy to view. all of LO's artwork from daycare now is on large construction paper and so unwieldy that if i bound them together, it wouldn't be all that fun to flip through, if you know what i mean.

Very cute idea! I've seen something like this on Pinterest, I'll probably end up doing a DIY version and make my own book. I hate throwing away artwork... but we have a tiny house and I'm planning on doing a lot of art with LO!

I saw this on Daily Candy and wanted to share:

The first time your little Monet brings home a finger-paint masterpiece, you’re gobsmacked. The 356th time? Not so much.

If you’re drowning in construction paper, let Plum Print be your life raft. The New York-based business turns your piles of kiddie art into photo books.

Start by sorting through your child’s creations. Plum Print recommends choosing pieces that your artiste completed herself and will travel well (pasta collages will likely crumble). Include any captions you want published (date, age, place) or information you need to convey (as in, “this side up”) — on the back of each piece.

Next, snail mail your collection to Plum Print. All artwork is then professionally digitized and handed over to a design team. A digital proof of the book, which runs from twenty to 120 pages, is sent your way for review.

Once you give the green light, your coffee table book is printed, bound, and shipped. Originals are returned for you to do with what you like.

May we suggest the garbage can?

Available online at plumprint.com, $85-$325.
