I was afraid this article was going to surface here.

Dr. Webb is my perinatologist. He performed my CVS and will do my 2nd level ultrasound in a few weeks.

He's been a wonderful doctor for me, and the stories in the news are incredibly graphic. There's no "other side" that's being posted, because obviously he and his lawyers cannot comment, due to doctor-patient privileges. I know he is still practicing and I'm sure if the Medical Boards were concerned, they'd have temporarily frozen his license. This occurred in March 2011 and he's still seeing patients and such.

I think the story sounds fishy. Things happen during birth--horrible, awful things, and I read the actual 30+ page lawsuit. The baby was stuck, he didn't use suction--he used a special maneuver (i forgot the name of it) and something very wrong happened in the process.

@LivsMama: I don't want to post too much because it is such a sensitive subjeect, but the blood spurting was a response to the pressure and the internal injury (maybe coming out of somewhere else-like the ear), but yes the head was still attached at that point. I just don't want someone to get the picture the babies head was ripped off completely by the traction. Completely agree, regardless the situation is so unimaginable.

@mrsmenow: thats what I thought, but I read the actual lawsuit and the couple claims that blood spurted out from the baby's neck due to the traction. So it doesnt sound like it was just an internal decapitation.

Either way, its horrifying. A couple lost a baby. Shudder

I don't understand how something like that could happen. It sounds like a story from the early days of obstetrics. I feel so bad for the couple. :(

This article just raised a bunch of questions. It all seems very confusing. I feel horrible for the parents, but I don't really understand what happened.

As someone in the medical field there seems to be a lot in this story missing. Until the doctors are in court we won't hear their side completely (if at all, I am gussing there will be a settlement and no one will ever hear it). Just to clarify-the brain stem was seperated from the spinal chord and wasn't seperated from the body from the traction, everything else reported happened after the c section.

It is still a terrible, terrible thing to have gone through and I can't imagine how those parents feel. It makes me feel gratful that I we have a doctor that we know really well and trust.

Warning: This story is a bit gruesome

I am quite disturbed after reading this story in the news.
Basically according to the couple their baby was came early at 28 weeks and the doctor refused to just go straight to a c-section, during the labor they had complications and the baby got stuck and needed traction to get the baby out and the baby's head separated from its body due to the force of traction applied. At which point they claim the doctor pushed the baby's head back in and did the c-section anyway in some attempt to cover up what had happened.
I wasnt aware that the use of traction could cause this? If the story is true then its a very worrying and horrible thing they had to endure.
