@BabyPenguinXO: A quick, speedy breakfast is sauteeing veggies in the beginning of the week, and then in the morning, throwing a scrambled egg in a pan with those veggies, flipping it into a soft tortilla, rolling it up and out the door with a breakfast burrito. One pan with a spatula for clean up later!

I'm not trying to make him live on snack ramen :) lol I am a couponer though so he definitely knows I'm more budget savy then he is and he tries to buy the cheaper stuff. I'll be home soon and hopefully I can either do his shopping and send food with him or cook ahead of time and send all the cooked food with him.

@Mamaof2: I'm not living near him currently. We are relocating cause of his new job and he went first because I was pregnant and had lots of high risk concerns. We didn't want to change doctors. But I'm 3 weeks PP and moving after my 6w check up and then that's the plan.

@BabyPenguinXO: if your trying to reduce the budget why not cook meals for him when he is home on the weekends.

You can match bathes of chili, lasagna, grilled chicken, burgers, etc and pack up his food for the week before he leaves.

There are a lot of "hidden" costs to cooking, unless you're really diligent about all of your tracking on the ingredients.

One idea to cut costs is not to shop at the regular grocery store, try to search out an ethnic market, they're usually less expensive, at least in my area.

Another idea would be to do a large shop and prep in the once a month cooking style.

I agree with others that you may have do a joint trip to kinda figure out meals. It also will depend on snacks and stuff (chips are expensive!) Also fresh meals versus pre-prepared meals.

We can usually do $100 for our family a week but we also have several meals that we eat out.

We spend about $150 a week on groceries and that covers all meals for our LO, breakfast everyday for DH, 3-4 lunches for both of us and 5-6 dinners for both. I rely a fair amount on convenience items like pre cut fruits and veggies because after a long day at work and commuting, I'm too tired to do a lot of prep work to get dinner on the table and will often skip veggies if they aren't easy to add. I imagine your fiancé would want to use some convenience items after working a 10hr shift.

I think $100 would be reasonable for someone who ate at home most meals and ate a large meal.

@oliviaoblivia: I agree, guys may tend to spend a bit more because they aren't always savvy shoppers!

DH and I live in a city, eat very fresh, rarely processed food, and we spend $100/wk for breakfast, lunch & dinner for both of us. If he is smart with his shopping I would say $50/wk should be good!

I'd probably spend $100. It's more expensive cooking for one and he probably doesn't have a stocked pantry to pull from.
My DH isn't good at grocery shopping or meal planning. He'll want a strip steak or whatever and will buy it at whatever price it's listed. I only buy steaks if they're a good price, same for most of our weekly shop. I once sent dh to get toilet paper and instead of buying the brand on sale, he bought the better brand at $25 a pack. I would never spend $25 on toilet paper because its always on sale but he doesn't get that.
Maybe your dh is the same.

If I really needed to be budget conscious, I could probably manage on 60-70/week. But, I would probably want to spend more on convenience foods - potentially a lot more if I were focused on getting relatively healthy convenience foods. It is extremely tough to dredge up the impetus to cook dinner after a 10h shift. Especially after the third or fourth 10h shift in a week.

@BabyPenguinXO: my guy is 6'4 150lbs and can eat like a horse. he can't cook to save his life though and maybe things are just pricy here but 100$ would just cover it.

Well it's hard when you're renting a house because then you don't have the basics stocked up. (Or is this a lease and they're the only ones using it?) I would think $75 would be ok. We feed a family of three for $125 a week. But we have stuff in the pantry and fridge/freezer that Soesnt need to be restocked every week.

I'd say $60-$75 at the most. I've eaten for myself on $30 a week, but that was a lot of cereal

I think $75 is very reasonable for 5/6 days of meals! My husband and I go every 2 weeks and spend about $130-160 depending on what we need to restock that month. Though we also eat out about twice per week too  Does your husband like to cook meal meals or is he like mine and just makes hot dogs or frozen burritos with tater tots and cheese on top and calls it a day lol  God he's gross.....

@BabyPenguinXO: It depends on the project. Sometimes they put them in corporate apartments (so a full kitchen) but they still get like $36 a day to cover their 3 meals (they get at least $46 if they are in hotels).

@Mrs.KMM: does he live in a hotel? My fiancé lives at a house with a full kitchen. They work 4 10's and 2 8's. So he usually goes grocery shopping after work one day a week to get his food for the week. He actually works with his dad so they take turns cooking sometimes. But he can bring left overs for lunches.
In my head $75 a week seems reasonable for that. I feed our son and myself on less then that.

It's not unreasonable for him to cook dinners and stuff. Though he likes a speedy grab and go breakfast like the frozen breakfast sandwiches for example

My husband travels for work a lot and gets per diems for meals. The cheapest cities are $46 a day. It definitely isn't always easy to eat on the cheap when you are away from home and all your resources while working long hours.

Breakfast/lunch/dinners made at home? Or lunch out? It's hard to say, I'm in northeast.... Just a shot in the dark guess would be $75/week on groceries assuming 3 meals?? Does he drink, beer/wine too. Tough to say! Sorry, that really want much help, more like a ramble....

My fiancé works away from home and rents a place with a bunch of guys because it's cheaper then gas driving and they work long hours. Anyways he will usually be at this house 5-6 days. Coming home Saturday after work and going back Monday morning.

It's in Kentucky. We seem to have very different ideas of how much is reasonable. He is a larger guy at 6'3 so he has quite the appetite.

Anyone have any ideas what's reasonable? I'm not asking the guy to live on ramen.
