I also do freezer cooking. I write a meal plan, shop, and prep the ingredients and freeze them. Then when it's time for the meal, I only have to put it together and cook it.

great thread! i definitely be checking out all the responses to this. This is a goal of mine for this summer. I want to start out the school year with a fantastic habit of cooking dinner, bringing my lunch to school, and just overall being together with life, etc.

I come up with a weekly menu and we grocery shop for that. I save money by making a menu and I'm more likely to cook because I don't want the produce to go bad. That makes me crazy!!

i batch prep all the ingredients for several meals then freeze them in ziploc bags. Defrost in the fridge overnight then pop in the crockpot the next morning. Easy peasy!

When I do cook (haven't because of health reasons recently), id decide the weekly menu over the weekend so I only have one trip to the store. Then I'm motivated to use up the fresh ingredients.

I do really easy meals now that I have lo. Love the slow cooker, its my go to way to cook. And ill do things like pizza, with store bought dough.

This is our system, most of the time it works:

Our goal is to eat out no more than three times a week- we have a Wednesday date night, a weekend breakfast, and one floater night for when I am not in a cooking mood.

I have a 7 days of the week sheet on the fridge- I try to fill it in at the beginning of the week with ideas. I use a master list of meals and sides that I have made with success, also I keep an eye on Smitten Kitchen and watch The Chew for ideas.

I usually do two smaller grocery shopping trips: one on Sunday/Monday and again on Thursday-ish, so I don't overwhelm myself with ideas and I can get fresher food and make changes if something comes up.

One thing that helped greatly last week- I made a thai chicken dish, cooked the extra chicken, shredded it, and threw it in the freezer. Last night I defrosted it and threw together enchiladas, it saved me so much time to have it cooked ahead!

I like doing meats that require marinating overnight so I can prep the meat the evening before and when I get home I just steam some vegetables while baking or grilling the meat.

Example: http://www.ourbestbites.com/2011/05/asian-bbq-chicken/

I am trying to get into a better habit of grocery shopping/cooking rather than our usual "let's see what we're feeling like tonight which turns into takeout" mode. While I start off the week well at the market and often cook a few dishes over the weekend, I find that I run out of ideas/energy by mid-week and surrender to takeout.

What techniques do you use to shop well and cook well, all while not spending your week or weekend in the kitchen? Any make-ahead recipes, ideas, or suggestions are welcomed!
