@ShootingStar: @hotchildinthecity: @PinkElephant: Strawberries contain a histamine-like chemical that can cause hives or rashes, but does not necessarily mean you're allergic.

If hives are present, I would be cautious and consider it might be a food allergy. Keep Benadryl on hand, and maybe see an allergist if you are concerned and want to confirm. Both of my kids have a lot of food allergies. LO2 doesn't scratch when there is redness or small patches of hives, but he is still very much allergic.

My neice had a wheat allergy in infancy. She was off of wheat for 3 or 4 years. When it was reintroduced she could eat it just fine.

@miramira: I would probably want a second opinion with a hives reaction. From our experience with our allergist we were always told not to mess around with hives or reactions that caused edema/facial swelling as the next reaction could be worse. My DD cannot tolerate Tylenol because her face swells. Everyone always comments how odd it is to be allergic to Tylenol. Maybe one day she can tolerate it but for now we avoid it.

Thanks everyone for sharing! It is reassuring to hear anecdotes about kids growing out of allergies.

@Mae: Yes, I would tend to listen to a doctor but I almost doubt the ability of the one we saw - she said that DS probably didn't have hives because he wasn't scratching himself. My kid is 7 months old; he CAN'T scratch himself intentionally like that... Plus, last time I saw her, she didn't really listen to what I was saying. I only had an appointment with her for DS because there weren't any others available. She's a general practitioner rather than a paediatrician. I'd have to get a referral to see a paediatrician or to visit an allergy clinic.

@daniellemybelle: That must've been so frightening and it's exactly what I'm scared of! You must have been nervous to reintroduce egg to her even at 14 months - I'm glad to hear it had disappeared!

@anbanan15: Wow, that must have been stressful. Fortunately, DS doesn't seem to take badly to my milk. And yes, I may ask for a referral to a paediatrician or allergy specialist, although they might just tell me that babies outgrow allergies (which is the information on our National Health Service's website)... hmm.

Like @shootingstar: both of my kids were able to eat various berries (particularly strawberries), then would get major contact rashes on their mouths/cheeks from eating/touching them. I was cautious for awhile, then tried again and no rash,

My daughter has just grown out of her allergy to cherries at 3.5 I kept trying them a few time a year, and this time they don't seem to bother her. So it does happen. She would have hives when she was still in diapers and the poop touched her skin. After she potty trained, they just seemed to make her stomach hurt.

My oldest had FPIES and could only tolerate a few foods via my milk or directly. We had to introduce foods slowly, one at a time, with a lot of trial and error. He's 4 now and can eat everything.

My youngest could only tolerate 3 foods in my breastmilk and nothing directly from 2 to 11 mo. Somehow at 11 mo she started to tolerate everything and now eats anything she wants with no issues.

My brothers and I all could not tolerate dairy as babies, but can all have it now. My one brother and I have trouble if we have too much (for me it is just regular milk, so I never drink it, but I am fine with all other dairy products).

The fact that he had a hives reaction would make me nervous though. I usually follow the advice of my doctors, but if you are not comfortable with the advice you are getting maybe try getting a second opinion from an allergist.

My LO had a mild allergic reaction to eggs at 7 months. She broke out in hives. We tried it again a few weeks later (baked in something which we were told by our doctor was safer) and she had a worse reaction. After that we waited until she was about 14 months, and she had outgrown it!

My general philosophy is listen to your doctor :)

But to pile on, I did a bit of reading allergies/sensitivities before deciding to give LO peanut butter at 10 mo. What I read was that for some allergies, especially minor ones, repeated exposure can lead to growing out of that issue.

Also I've never heard of anyone dying from wheat. Seems like wheat allergies tend to be more minor than peanuts or nuts or shellfish.

I'm not sure how old your son is, but my daughter grew out of all her sensitivities. I don't think we will ever know the full extent of her sensitivities but I had to stay off dairy, soy, corn, eggs, nuts, and peanuts for almost her whole first year. We gradually re-introduced foods one by one and she was able to eat everything on the list by 14 months. We did get allergy testing done though, just in case.

When my brother was a baby he was allergic to milk, eggs, wheat, soy, and peanuts. He's still allergic to all but the wheat; that he grew out of. So it happens!

We've discovered that DS might have a sensitivity to wheat. He developed a few hives shortly after having a fair amount of it (he had only ever had a tiny bit before).

The doctor advised us to avoid wheat for a couple of weeks, then try reintroducing it. I suppose that's fairly standard advice, but I'm worried that he might have a more severe reaction next time!

I would like to think that he has a sensitivity simply because his gut is still immature. Could it be something he might grow out of? What have your experiences been? Thanks!

ETA: Forgot to mention that he's 7 months old!
