My parents were super involved, especially my mom. They were at every recital, concert, classroom party, game, school play, practice, lesson, etc. My dad was my brother's Boy Scout leader. My mom was my Girl Scout leader (and later on, so was my dad). My dad helped construct sets for every musical I was in. They were the embarassing parents screaming at the top of theirlungs from the sidelines. It embarassed me as a kid but I really grew to appreciate it as I got older. They always made sure that we knew how proud of us they were.

There were 3 of us, so I really have to hand it to them.

My parents (mainly my dad) was heavily involved in my school work. He'd double check all my homework before I could call it a night and put it in my backpack. He was a brilliant guy so I knew when I had questions, he'd be able to help. However, he would never, ever give me the answers and it irritated me because he would just be like it's in the book. They don't ask you questions when the answer isn't in the book. So even if it took me 2 hours to "find the answer", he would never give up the answer nor let me go to sleep by putting some random answer.

My parents were pretty involved during primary school, but I also had an after-school tutor which helped. I went to boarding school for secondary so they couldn't help even if they wanted to! I plan to be involved with my kids, but I'm not going to do their projects or work for them. They have to figure it out on their own.

My mom was a SAHM and was very involved in our elementary school. She was probably there most days, much to my dismay. However, she was always helping out the teachers in the office and certainly not hovering over me. I think she really cared about the school and the teachers.

I rode the bus to and from school. I don't remember my mom being involved in my homework besides asking me if I did it.

ETA: Bibliographies were one exception. My mom has a degree in library science so my brother and I had to have perfect bibliographies regardless of how awful the report was.

@banana: I agree. It doesn't mean i'm going to throw my kids to the wolves but i will provide them with whatever support they need. I'll take them to the library, but they can figure out how to find the books on their own or engage the librarian to help them. My parents made it very clear how important school was, and plus, i was a bit of a nerd and looooved doing homework. I hope i don't become a micromanaging mom either!

@Freckles: Same! I plan on being involved by supporting them, helping them when they get stuck, and being involved with the school and teachers to make sure they're getting the resources that they need. But I don't plan on helping them with every project that they have or constantly reminding them to do their homework or double-checking their work. They need to learn these soft lessons early on to succeed later in life.

This might sound kind of weird but I view my kids like how I would treat my team at work. My direct reports come to me when they need assistance or support or can't get to the next step. I"ll check in with them on a weekly basis and am always available if they need my support.. But I don't micro-manage them every step of the way on all of their projects and am not overly involved in that way. They have to learn from their mistakes. If they let something slip through the cracks, it's on them. If they did something great, that's also all them! I notice it gives my team a sense of pride and accomplishment by working this way. Nobody wants a micro-managing boss and I don't plan on being a micro-managing mom.

And btw, I used rice too! It's called creative problem solving! :)

@TheReelDeal: My parents always passed by our schools (elementary and high school) so they knew when report card day was. I'm pretty sure they were counting down the days until i brought home that piece of paper!

@Koolbreeze: I think parents should be involved, but only to the extent of knowing what's going on. I want my kids to come to me if they are stuck, but i also want them to build the skills needed to figure things out on their own.

@Mrs. High Heels: I always wondered if my projects would have been better if i had help! There was this embarrassing moment where i didn't tell my parents i needed glue for a project and it was too late to buy some. What did i use? Rice!!

not at all! i remember my dad helping me learn to read in kindergarten/1st grade, but after that i was pretty much on my own! they've never been to a single performance and only showed up at graduations. i always envied kids whose parents helped them with their science projects.

My mom never helped with homework, but she made sure it was done and I could never pull the old "the teacher didn't give us any homework" card. She would read my report card like it was a gripping NYT best selling novel. If a teacher said something in the comments section she would ask me what I was doing wrong in class. She also went to all my parent teacher conferences until I went to high school. For a single parent that is not an easy thing to do.

Mine were fairly involved... I rarely asked for help on schoolwork and hid the occasional report card, haha. But school and grades was important to them, so they always asked about it.

They made it to countless orchestra/choir concerts, musical and talent show performances, dance recitals, and a zillion other things like that. Looking back at that, I really appreciate that!!

My parents were involved. Dad used to help me with math homework and Mom would proofread my essays. Also, they were great with coming up with ideas for school projects, like helping me find different items to use when I had to make 3D diagrams. They always went over report cards and tests to make sure I was on the right track.

My parents were also immigrant small business owners and rarely ever home. My mom was still very, very involved with our education though. She never missed a single mtg, concert, performance, etc and checked in with me daily to make sure my school work was done correctly. She would also make sure my work was organized and all my school things were neat. I credit her with how organized and type-a I turned out ;)

Only my mom would attend parent/teacher nights and would come to school concert things IF she could make it. Otherwise, I'd just go by myself to perform and walk home afterwards - my parents were busy working.

When it came to homework, they never helped me. Once I needed help in math homework and asked my dad and he actually became upset with me for not paying attention close enough to understand it the first time. SIGH.

As a teacher, I really see the importance of having parental involvement in a student's life. I plan to be very involved and make myself known to her teachers.

I grew up in a very similar situation as you! My parents both owned a business so I was basically a latch-key kid. They weren't involved in my school work but I think it's mainly because they didn't speak English very well. They helped me with math but only up until 6th grade. They only looked at my report cards and signed off on papers. I received pretty good grades so they never questioned me in terms of school work. I have to admit that I did learn a lot by figuring things out on my own though. I plan on being involved with my kids' education as a guide and to help them when they're stuck. But I think I'd like to give them some independence to learn on their own and to learn from their mistakes. One bad grade won't kill their future, but it may teach them a lesson about what it feels like to fail at something and how to pick themselves back up again. I think these types of lessons are far more important than getting good grades when they're younger. I know plenty of kids who got way too much help from mom and dad in jr high/high school and ended up failing out of college because they didn't know how to do it on their own. :(

My parents were not involved at all, really, save insisting I got myself there every day. I know that DH's parents were the same - his mum is an English graduate and works as a newspaper editor and was shocked when DH failed his English exams. Like... how did she not know he was failing?!!

I vow to be totally different. I want to be involved in their education 100%.

My parents had their own business and worked crazy hours. The only time they were involved was to show up for parent/teacher interviews (at which time they grilled my teachers extensively), look at my report card, and sign off on field trip permission forms.

http://jenhatmaker.com/blog/2013/05/30/worst-end-of-school-year-mom-ever/

I never even thought to ask my parents for help for any school-related work unless it was to drive me to the library. Do you think parents are more stressed these days because schools are requiring them to be more involved? Or do they just feel as if they need to be involved in all of their kids' projects/school work?
