@Woolly Mammoth: That's my son's exact trajectory! Interesting that you suspect placenta problems too. I was the same weight as my son at birth, but didn't grow like he has. I'm glad to hear he's not mammoth or anything (despite your username) at 1 year!

@erinpye: If I don't worry, what else will fill up my time? :silly:

My son was 6 lbs 2 oz (5th percentile? 10th percentile? I can't remember) and 50th percentile for height. He was back to his birth weight by day 3. He doubled his birth weight by two months and tripled it by six months. At his one year appointment he was 96th percentile for height and 87th for weight.

I didn't have any bleeding during pregnancy, but I do suspect some placental problems towards the end. He was really small for being a week late and his heart rate had low variability when I got to the hospital despite not really being in labor yet.

That said, I was 6 lbs 8 oz at birth and had a similar growth curve. I was always a tall/big child.

I read that doctor's offices mismeasure approximately 70% of the time. I think they want a general idea that your baby is growing and gaining appropriately, but it's not exact. My doctor laughed last time I was in with my youngest because she magically went from somewhere in the 30th percentile in length (which we knew wasn't accurate at the time) to over 90th (she's in 18 month clothes at 9.5 months, so that's probably closer). He commented the measurements are often off. I mean, how accurately can you measure a wiggly baby, laying flat, marking with a pencil on that thin paper they use to cover the exam tables‽ As long as your babe is healthy and growing and your doctor isn't concerned, don't worry, mama!

My DS was fairly average at birth, probably 50-55% for everything, and pretty average until 4 months. Then, he just took off and was at the top of the charts at 1 year.

DD was the opposite. Very average 50 percentiles at birth and under 10% at 1 year.

My LO hasn't really followed a growth curve. Weight started average, then went high (80%), and is now going low (30%). Height was low to start and is now lower (10% at our last appointment). The head circumference was the worst because they measured wrong a few times and it looked like her head actually shrunk at her last appointment!

The height / weight board had me thinking... (and the questions / answers about the 95% child)

Did you baby follow the same growth curve from birth?

Background:

My son was born </= 25% (he was 6 lbs 13 ozs) for weight and (I think) height, but is now either off the charts for height and weight or at the very top (we see the pediatrician next week). At our first pediatrician appointment after he was born the doctor actually had him re-weighed as she was so surprised he had not only gained back the weight he had lost, but also gained some! She also had him re-measured at the 1 month appointment because she had never seen a baby grow so much in height -- she said they must have done his measurements poorly at the hospital.

As an aside, I had major bleeding issues in my pregnancy and had suspected placental abruption. I can't help but feel like maybe the placental problems are why he was so small at birth and is now so big. The pediatrician also alluded to this (she knows my story as we thought he was going to come early when I was on hospital bed rest). I'm just wondering if other people have experienced this - small at birth and then grew like gang busters - or if it really may be the placenta stuff.
