@Mrs.KMM: that's impressive!!! I dunno, she said T was gaining "about the max a baby can gain" and that was a pound a week.

Eta: that's about two ounces a day. I can't math. So yeah, nevrrmind

I wouldn't be concerned by what percentage your LO is at so long as the percentage isn't trending downward. So the percentage drops you listed would be worrying to me but hopefully they'll settle or start rising soon.

@blackbird: Really? Because my DD blew that weigh gain (your ped saying they can't really gain more than an ounce a day) out of the water! Between 5 days old and her 1 month appointment, she gained 46 ounces!

@ldh112: yeah, 2 to 4 ounces per session I what you're aiming for! It's a good idea to keep supplementing and going back for weighted feeds until you hit over the 2 ounce mark. Sounds like you're doing everything right.

She pooped all the time until about 12 days old. Then it's been more like 2x a week with just blow outs. That's also about the time we incorporated formula 2-4x a day. I've been concerned about this as well and the pediatrician said to keep her posted. My daughter has gone three times this week (we switched from similac to Hipp organic formula not sure if that's why the increase or not). I have tried to not worry too much because it's just added insult to injury for me emotionally - something else to google and obsess over. She has plenty of wet diapers though.

I may take her back to the lactation clinic for a weighted feed this week to see if she's transferring more. At one week she was transferring like .5 oz and at 3 weeks she transferred 1.25 oz in a 45 min feed. Ideally it should be closer to 2 oz + per session from what they told me.

I believe KellyMom recommends average weight gain of 3-7 ounces per week so if she's gaining within that range, having plenty of wet and dirty diapers and is generally happy and content then you're probably doing ok!

Lots of babies move percentiles in the first few months as they find their "natural" curve (particularly if mum had IV fluids during labour) but it's never a bad idea to keep in regular contact with an IBCLC so you ave support!

My ebf baby was born in the 4th percentile for weight, and 2nd percentile for her head! She was 5lb 14oz at birth. Now, she's 9 weeks old, and has been at the 16th percentile for weight for a while. The doctor said she's petite, but proportionate and gaining, so she's not concerned.

Definitely follow the WHO weight charts if she is breastfed, rather than the CDC charts. The CDC charts are for formula fed babies. It sounds like you're doing everything right. If she is refusing a bottle she's probably not hungry, you can't make her eat. I would just watch and make sure she follows her own growth curve. I once read that after about 2 months of age, babies are more likely to be on their natural curve rather than a curve because of external factors.

My son has always been small and is between the 10-25%ile for weight. But some kids have to be on the outside of those curves - that's why theyre shaped like that!!

Our dd dropped percentiles at every appointment. At 6 months she was done to the 3rd%ile. We actually had a weight check this best week at 7.5 months she gained percentiles and is up to the 5th! I was kind of scared there would be a push to formula feed from both the dr and dh if her weight still went down, but thankfully that wasn't the case.

My daughter now 2.5 yr old, was around 15th percentile for a while and then even dropped to 10%. We would talk about her weight at every well child visit and after questions the doctor decidea she is fine. Doctor said she looks proportionate and is happy, so she isn't concerned. Also was getting plenty of wet diapers and poopies. Every child is different, and now I can truly say this as we just had our second baby. Our son at his 1 month checkup was in the 65th percentile. He's fitting into my daughter's 6 months onesies now at 7 weeks. He also gets plenty of wet diapers and poops even more than daughter. I don't feel like I'm doing anything drastically different yet they are so different in weight and their growth speed.

I wouldn't be concerned about a low weight percentile, but I would be concerned about the downward trend. It doesn't matter where they are at on the bell curve, as long as they aren't losing. Mine has always been in the 10th percentile for weight, so she's just petite. The only time they ever worried was when she dropped to the 5th percentile. If they're recommending supplementing, I would be doing that in addition to working on your supply and latch, etc.

@ldh112: I don't think there's any place she "should" be as long as she's gaining. Some babies will be 95/90 and some will be 95/30, it's just how their bodies are built. If the trend continues downward, though, I'd be concerned about that

I miscalculated and she's actually at 8 lb 13.5 oz this week. at one week old for weight she was in 58%, then 46%, 47%, and now 39%. I guess I am confused about where she should be on the curve since her length puts her at 96%.

My lo was born small 6lb 10oz so I was always worried about her weight. Her Dr and the office were very supportive of breastfeeding and did a great job re assuring me she was doing fine. She was around the 15% for the longest time for weight. As long as they stay on their curve and aren't dropping off my Dr said not to worry.

My ob on the other hand made me feel inadequate and suggested formula just based on looking at my baby during my own 6 week checkup. She went so far as calling the pediatrician. I went in for an extra weighing and they said all was good! I think some Drs are just less familiar with breastfeeding.

I always countered my pediatrician's weight concerns by pointing out its a bell curve and their will always be babies on each end of the curve. I'm very petite so when my daughter slowly dropped % and evened out at about 10% for weight it didn't overly worry me.

Our ped said 1 ounce a day was about the most a baby could legitimately gain-mine's 95% for height and 50% for weight. And she thinks it's just his structure-long and lean. He dropped a bit the week after we got his tongue clipped (week 2), but she was confident it was only because he didn't feel well, and that his appetite would pick up soon. So I kept pumping because he wasn't eating much. We didn't supplement, even when he didn't gain anything. Anywhere from 0.5-1.0 oz would be ok for me, though, after I was sure his mouth wasn't hurting. T's obviously was causing him issues and he wasn't totally sure how to use it once it was clipped. It seemed disorganized, like you said

Just curious to know how concerned your newborns' pediatricians have been about percentiles for growth? I've had some breast feeding issues and my one month old's weight gain hasn't always pleased the doctor. The issues have seemed to be supply and/or her ability to transfer efficiently based on a couple weighted feeds at a lactation clinic and observations by my midwife and the lactation nurse that her suck is a bit disorganized (which the nurse at the pediatrician's office also seemed to agree with after observing a feeding). I'm taking supplements to hopefully boost supply if that's an issue.

Anyway, at two weeks she was only up 2.5 (before not knowing we had issues), not quite back to birth weight of 8 lb 1 oz. Per the pediatrician's concerns, I started to supplement 2-3 x a day after feedings where my daughter still seemed hungry and this is when I began taking fenugreek which she also recommended. The next week my daughter was up 9 oz. This week I backed off supplementing since it seemed like she was more satiated and my supply was (seemingly) more regulated.

In 9-10 days she gained 6oz this time and is at 9.1 lbs. She's now in the 39th percentile for weight and 95th for length. My midwife said she's probably just fine (i've been giving her updates weekly- we have gone to the pediatrician's office weekly because of her concern for weight gain) but I can't help but feel a little worried since the doctor really wants to see her gain closer an ounce a day. I offered her a bottle and she didn't want it last night but did take it another time after nursing (usually 30-45 min sessions). I am planning to offer and see if she wants it. I want her to be healthy but I feel a bit confused on who/what to listen to because there is so much out there to read and get overwhelmed by. I've looked at the growth charts (my pediatrician uses one by the CDC) and the one by the WHO seems to put her closer to 50% for weight but I can't quite tell if I am reading it accurately.

Anyway, just curious to know how percentiles were used early on with your babies! I'd love to be able to simply breastfeed but am not against supplementing... its just been an emotional month trying to figure out what is "right" for us.
